The 71-year-old McCain had a relationship with Vicki Iseman, now 40, although both say the relationship was not romantic. "But to his advisers, even the appearance of a close bond with a lobbyist whose clients often had business before the Senate committee Mr. McCain led threatened the story of redemption and rectitude that defined his political identity," the Times reported.

McCain's defenders criticized the Times story, calling it a "smear" job against the Republican presidential candidate.

This is not a smear campaign...its showing that the man who represents the "family values" party isn't about family values. If he can lie to his wife, then the rest of the country has no chance (if he became president)!!!

The New York Times digs, finds little to besmirch McCain LET ME BE AMONG THE FIRST TO CONGRATULATE SEN. I don't know if its a smear campaign not, but, it does show just how deep in the pocket of lobbyists he is and, that karma can come back and get you. He left his first wife, who I think was sick or a cripple for his young, wealthy trophy wife, so much for morals and the "sanctity" of marriage and the GOP, again.

How come its not a smear campaign when a democrat is being talked about? Republicans are like the annoying little sister they talk smack, lie and name call but the second you do it back they cry. I like McCain but if you play in the dirt long enough your gonna get dirty.

The reason this is a smear campaign is that it isnt true, or at least its not proven. There is a guy saying he did blow and had a homosexual act with Obama, but you dont see fox news reporting on it. The Times did what they knew they would do, they endorsed his bid for candidacy because he is the most liberal republican, and as soon as it appears he has sealed the nomination they attacked him with this smut. The timing is way to coincidental.

I do believe it's a smear campaign. Shame on the NY Times to publish this with absolutely no proof whatsoever. Do I think he's in bed with more lobbyists than the average politician? Sure, but when allegations like these are made, proof must also be presented. I thought this was done in very poor taste. I want Obama to win, but not at the expense of the media's cheap shots.
