Clinton hires black woman as new campaign manager

In a statement on the campaign's web site, Clinton said: "Patti Solis Doyle has done an extraordinary job in getting us to this point - within reach of the nomination - and I am enormously grateful for her friendship and her outstanding work. And, as Patti has said, this already has been the longest presidential campaign in history and one that has required enormous sacrifices of everyone and our families. I look forward to her continued advice in the months ahead. Patti and I have worked with Maggie Williams for more than a decade. I am lucky to have Maggie on board and I know she will lead our campaign with great skill towards the nomination."

Margaret "Maggie" Williams served as chief of staff to former president Bill Clinton, responsible for managing his foundation and his personal staff, according to an official bio.

Prior to joining the Clinton Foundation, Williams was president of Fenton Communications, and before that she served in the White House as chief of staff to Hillary Clinton and a top adviser to President Clinton from 1993-97.

Williams has also worked for the Children's Defense Fund, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, former senator Robert Torricelli, and the Democratic National Committee.

Doyle, who served as Clinton's previous campaign manager, had come under fire from critics after the candidate lost the Iowa caucuses last month.  Doyle's departure follows a string of losses for the Clinton campaign Saturday in Nebraska, Washington state and Louisiana, and it comes on the heels of the recent revelation that the Clintons had to lend $5 million to their effort after raising $100 million in 2007.

Donna Brazile was the first African American woman to lead a presidential campaign.  She headed Vice President Al Gore's 2000 campaign for the presidency.
