Hillary Clinton is the Obvious Choice
Jacqueline Jackson | Posted February 4, 2008 12:46 AM
Many of you know me as the wife and partner to my husband, Reverend Jesse Jackson. But today I write as a citizen, deeply concerned about my country and its future.
Jacqueline Jackson is a civil rights activist.
Many of you know me as the wife and partner to my husband, Reverend Jesse Jackson, sharing each step in a 45-year long civil rights journey that began with Dr. King, and was highlighted by my husband’s historic campaigns for president in 1984 and 1988. Some know me as the mother to five wonderful children, and a proud grandmother of six. Still, others know me as an activist who grew up in the Deep South, the daughter of migrant workers challenged by poverty. In my life, I have worn many hats, but today I write as a citizen, deeply concerned about my country and its future.
Since 1960, each presidential election has been described as "the most important ever" for Americans, especially black people. In 2008, because America has so much at stake – domestically and internationally – I believe it to be true! There is simply too much at stake to bet on hope or chance. That happened in 2000 and look where it got us. African American voters – like everyone in this country – want to know which candidate has the strength and experience necessary to move our country forward after two terms of indifference and neglect.
Among the Democrats, there are two qualified candidates for president. However, while they both may be good candidates, there is only one great candidate, and that’s Hillary Clinton. For many African Americans, this election poses some hard choices. But we’ve been faced with difficult choices before. After a lot of thought, prayer and debates at the family dinner table, my choice for president is Hillary Clinton.
For nearly four decades, Hillary’s actions have resonated just as loudly as her words. She is an open book, from her career as a lawyer, an activist, First Lady, and as a U.S. Senator. Her values, commitment and accomplishments are evident for all to see and judge. No other candidate has her proven leadership and experience of 35 years of standing up and fighting for the issues that matter most to our country. Her track record is proof that she is the most qualified candidate to turn our nation’s potential into reality, and to make our hopes and dreams a reality.
Hillary Clinton has taken the bold and audacious step of running to become America’s first woman President. She has always been willing to stand up for the least of us to make all of America better for all of us. In all the years I’ve known Hillary Clinton she has always kept her commitments, and that’s just one of the reasons I will keep mine. More than 60 years ago, Eleanor Roosevelt and Mary McLeod Bethune, formed an extraordinary alliance to make America better. The challenges facing our country require another such alliance: Hillary Clinton is my Eleanor Roosevelt and we are her Mary McLeod Bethune, fighting side by side to restore the promise of America.
As we look around the globe, we see the outstanding accomplishments and ultimate sacrifice that women heads of state have made leading their countries. If we are to restore America’s ethical and moral leadership, we must move into the 21st century and elect the most qualified candidate for president...who happens to be a woman.
Today, America faces the historic challenge of ending the war in Iraq and bringing our troops home. We face the challenge of reinvesting billions of dollars of funding for the war to improving education, the health care system, creating jobs and improving our infrastructure at home. The next president will have the overwhelming responsibility of reversing the go-it-alone policies and programs of the Bush Administration. Our next president must inject the principles of democracy, human and constitutional rights and civil rights back into the soul of America.
When I vote for president this time, I am borrowing a phrase from my husband -- we don’t seek "perfect servants" but "public servants." That’s why I’m voting for our most trusted public servant and our most qualified leader, Hillary Clinton. My husband Jesse has been a trailblazer fighting to expand America’s definition of democracy so that it equally includes all people. I stand by pioneers and trailblazers, and I stand by Hillary.
Hillary Clinton will be a great president for our children, our families and for all of America. We know exactly what Hillary Clinton stands for because she always stood with us. Now is the time for us to stand with her in making this country great again.

what i cant seem to understand is why black women cant seem to get behind the the highly effective man when so many of our your brothers need this to happen now. it now or after the next riot? can you not see the pain so many brothers trying to make suffer. we need this now!!!!!! a Obama is the man we need now.
February 4, 2008 6:35 PM
I totally agree with the February 4, 2008 4:26 PM comment. Finally, we have an articulate, educated, very well qualified Brother running for the highest official position in this country yet our community is not standing behind him unanimously!
Poor Mrs. Jackson is a champion of her shady husband and elatedly supporting a white woman instead of someone who understand our plight and would change the way that the world sees us and bring into play a great deal of opportunities for future generations of people of color.
February 4, 2008 9:37 PM
I am not in agreement with Mrs. Jackson; I don't support her husband. But she just like every other person who is of african descent should be able to vote for whomever she wants to vote for. So many have faught for blacks to have equal rights in America, and still we are not free. Free to make our own choices without being criticized by our own people because we can't stand behind someone on an issues or issues we don't support. We are all different, and our differences are what separates us. One should not be penalized because of different views. There were people who thought Jeff Fort did blacks some good. I don't see any positive Jeff Fort did, he killed his own people. Women, kids, whoever got in his way. But this is my opinion. I support Mr. Obama, not because he is black, but because I feel (I may be wrong) that he will address issues of all people, and not of a specific race. Blacks keep going backwards. You two mirror the same mentality it sounds, as Mr. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. It's all about race. So before you go criticising someone, read what you have written. What you are saying, and what Mr. Sharpton and Jackson are saying is not different. Peace!
February 4, 2008 9:50 PM
I DON'T AGREE WITH MRS. JACKSON...JESSIE JACKSON IS A PIMP OF POOR PEOPLE AND HE DOESN'T WANT TO SEE OBAMA, WHO IS CLEARLY A BRILLIANT MAN WHO PEACHES INCLUDING EVERYONE (BLACK, WHITE, ASIAN, LATINA, NATIVE AMERICAN) IN THE POLITICAL PROCESS AS PRESIDENT OF THE U S....MRS. JACKSON SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HERSELF!!!
YOU AND MRS CLINTON ... BOTH ARE VERY WEAK WOMEN AND i HAVE NO RESPECT FOR YOU TWO WEAK WRENCHES....

Let’s remove our own shackles and emancipate ourselves!
I am so tired of the so called "Black leaders" backing the Clintons and acting like Bill's continuous infidelity--black women sexing, Baptist church going, saxophone playing, and Vernon Jordan hanging b.s. makes him our first Black president. Really?!
Moreover, do we as a community think so low of ourselves that we will allow Jesse and Al's moral character and media pimpin represent the complex issues facing our community. What a joke! I'm not mad at folks championing the efforts of Jena Six, I was down, but I rather we put our energy in continuing the fight for equal education in urban communities or permanent voting rights for blacks.
Here we have a black presidential candidate who seems capable of running in a broad range of political and social contexts and he's not good enough to represent us.
I read the comments from Jesse's wife about Hillary and thought, I am sure you do support her, your man is similar to hers. The two women have a lot in common and their marital relationships aren't modeling feminism for young girls or other women. I'm not saying that some other men aren't shady too--just that as key political figures, I hold them to a different standard--at least be tight with your business if you are going to run the streets.
So if Billy was SO Black how come he didn't make the fight/right for Blacks to vote a permanent law?!
WAKE UP BLACK PEOPLE!
February 5, 2008 1:11 PM
So in sum, Mrs Jackson is supporting Hillary because of a belief that certain people are entitled to win. Hillary has fought nearly "four decades" for our rights. But, thanks to the Clinton's stewardship, where exactly are we?
How is that black women seem to be more beholden to their gender now that a black candidate is in the race. How many of these women are active members of Hillary's inner circle? I am not speaking about an adviser. I am specifically talking about one who runs the show like Donna Brazille did back in 2000.
Obama will not be the answer to our problems. But neither are the Clinton's and it's about time we stop treating them like masta'a.
February 5, 2008 1:36 PM
I totally agree with you Xavier... Obama is not the answer. Black people are in a regression. We can't seem to stop living in the slavery era. The Shackles were taken off, but we put them back on. Black Americans are so self-satified with having someone lead them to the water. They don't know how to take initiative, and look for the water themselves. No one can blame the Clintons for anything. Most blacks in America was at one time supporting him. Because they thought he acted like a Black man. Damn, you either got to be for the people, or risk getting your head bit off because you don't agree. What was the purpose of having the freedom to vote??? WE are our own worse emenemy. We are the ones who are smoking the drugs (no matter where its coming from), supporting (in our hood) other nationality groups. Jeff Fort was a prime example of how Blacks are towards blacks. We don't care. Get off the race kick. We are keeping slavery alive. Harriet Tubman was a Matriarch. She brought us to freedom. The black men wanted to go back to slavery. Her own husband tried to turn her in. I see history is repeating itself. Wake up people!!
February 6, 2008 10:14 AM
I just LOVE how all these black people on here are holding a Clinton Hatefest. When just a few years ago, ya'll loved the very ground they walked on. Most of you are talking straight out the side of your necks. Other than being black, you people don't know this man from a can of paint. Barrack Obama could get in office and flip the script on all of ya'll. Since everyone's so pro-black....where's the support for Conde Rice, Clarence Thomas or Colin Powell?! There all strong, highly educated, intelligent black people. Where's their support?!?!
I personally support Hillary Clinton based on her record, 35 years experience and character. I could give a flying monkeys behind about her RACE or GENDER, and if anyone is voting either of those two, then YOU are a FOOL!!! I'm sorry, but being black is NOT ENOUGH to get my support for the most important job in the world. We need an EXPERIENCED leader!
February 6, 2008 10:50 AM
Jay, unless you know every single black person alive, I do not think you get to speak for all of us. We have every right to change our opinions about anyone (black or white). Other than being the wife of Bill Clinton, we do not know Hillary from adam's apple. She could get into office and give us more sentencings, more don't ask, more welfare and more defense of marriage acts.
February 6, 2008 11:45 AM
You are for Obama because he speaks of change, but besides that were does he stand on the issues? What has he said he is going to change except lobbyist, but really he isn't changing that except you can't eat with them? Is he going to change Education? No he has not mentioned it. Education is the one thing needs to be improved for all of America and until that is changed our economy will continue to be bad, our community will continue to struggle, and our country will continue to be a mockery around the world. Education is the key to everything and without it we all fail. Lets stop making this race about white and black. Lets make it about what is right. Vote for the right person not the person that looks like you. Look at the issues and look at where they stand on them. Look at their records. Showing up to votes and only saying present and not voting is not a stand on an issue.
Wake up my black people, Obama is back by white wealthy men. So when he gets into office who is going to have to return favors to and take care of? Those white wealthy men who got him into office. Educate yourself and stop looking at color. Color is not the issue here, the issue is what is best for you and your family and our community. And we should vote on those issues not the issue of color.
February 6, 2008 2:37 PM
X my friend, I never said ALL black people. I merely said "Ya'll" black people on this particular message board. So I'm not trying to speak for every black person and neither can YOU. Any infomation concerning Hillary Clinton's public service is right at your finger tips. The fact that you used a computer to respond to my post, let's me know the info is accessible to you.
I find it almost laughable that you would say other than being Bill Clinton's wife, no one knows who she is. Dude, are you kidding me with that statement?! Even Hillary's worst political enemy wouldn't make a statement like that. Either you've been living under a rock for the past 15-20 years, or you're a COMPLETE IDIOT! Please don't speak for all black people when making stupid comments like that. Just admit that YOU don't know her and let's call it a day. There's no sense in pulling a whole race of people in on your stupidity, OK!
February 6, 2008 3:42 PM
Jaye, I apologize maybe you can speak for those on this board. My first post to this board was on Monday. I can not speak for the others on this board who until now, "loved the ground the Clinton's walked on." I've never been part of the love-fest.
Other than her being The First lady I did not know much about her. I first heard of her while in college. At that time, she was Bill Clinton's wife and I knew of no other notable accomplishments outside of being his wife. In 2008, I now know what she has done during her Senate terms. If you ask the average voter about Hillary's life, 80% of it is tied to her husband.
By the same, any information regarding Obama is right at your fingertips. I encourage you to take your own advice.
I am not 12 years old, I am 29. As such, it is unecessary for me to respond to your juvenile antics in kind. Your elocution speaks for itself.
February 6, 2008 5:39 PM
"X" that was a cute little response! I really enjoyed it! However, at 29 year's old you already know such things. I challenge you to re-read your own post and you'll see how truly ignorant you sound. I almost wish you were 12 years old. At least then you would have some sort of excuse for such drible. I don't blame you for going under the name "X."
I don't dislike Senator Obama. I think he's an amazing human being. I don't have to google his infomation. Unlike YOU, I've done my research on BOTH candidates. I was impressed with him before he became a new senator. I just prefer Hillary Clinton for President over him. I think she has a better vision for this country, and clear plan for getting us out of this mess G.w.B got us into.
I honestly challenge you to educate yourself on both candidates, and not fall for the fluff and B.S. If we as Dems. don't come together as a party and get behind whoever gets the nomination this fall, WE ALL LOSE! And that's real talk! You have a great day!

February 7, 2008 6:17 PM
Who is she, other than the wife of professional victim? Her comments don't reflect, the new, positive outlook that Obama has to offer. Some of these blacks with the slave mentaity need a reality check, Obama is just as qualifed, if, not more so, than either Clinton, both of whom talk the talk, but, neither has ever walked the walk to make life better for any black peorsn, other than those on thier payroll. And, the others who insult blacks who support a totally viable , qualifed black man for the office, amazing, free since the 1860's but, still need whites to show them the way.
And, someone tell her, HRC is not the first woman to run for the WH, it was a woman, and, she was black, but, then again, the HRC supporters could never allow themselves to consder voting for a black, man, and, no way a black woman.
February 7, 2008 11:21 PM
being an independent some of the comments are a little off base. You should look at both of the peoples
running background and compare them then make
a choice. The internet is a good to use just do not go on what some one has told you or you found on the sites
that cater to on certain person. As for clinton he did pass nafta, the bill to consolidate the media, pass laws
for prisons and how people are place there, help the republicans pass laws that took programs away from poor working mothers which bush is also doing. pass the bill which help the bank that is why we are in this forclosure mess. to me clinton was the best moderate
republican president we ever had and to me if hillary is so for the people why did she not come out when bill was in office. last point look at all the bills that the republican wrote that clinton pass and in some cases were more then they as for.
Remember look for what is best for us not them they work for us

I think a lot Black institutionalized Democrats got caught off guard by Obama's candidacy. Hillary had such easy victories in her NY Senate races that no one thought she would receive such a challenge, even from John Edwards.
Some of those 'Black Leaders' are angered that he essentially burst his way into the election without thier annointance. That's they way we have to do it folks!!! Not wait, but take . . . legally!!!
Ms. Jackson probably identifies with Ms. Clinton a lot, both the wives of deadbeat cheats!!!!
Hillary's been talking a lot about her experience and what she wants to do, where as Obama has been talking about changing the system and utilizing everyone to make this happen. Funny, Bill said the same thing about us not being able to afford to have all Americans participating in the process. We also need to do away with this dynasty mentality. Bushes and Clintons, who next after Hillary...Chelsea?
Also, for those Black elected officials with their tepid or non endorsements, African American people can make decisions on our own. Now that you are in positions earning 6 figures or more, your plight is not the same as the masses.
Obama does not come across as the Messiah, he's even acknowledged his flaws on multiple ocassions and stated that this election is about all of us, not just those who feel that due to 35 years of experience, they should be nomininated. As I last scanned the requirements for that position, it states a minimum age of 35 years.
Get over it Ms. Jackson doll!
