Clinton-Obama feud may hurt Democratic Party in the fall
Staff Reporter | Posted March 28, 2008 11:11 AMSixteen percent of Hillary Clinton's supporters said they are not likely to vote in the general election if Obama is the Democratic nominee, and an equal number of Barack Obama's supporters said they'll sit it out as well if Clinton wins the nomination, according to a new CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey.
Even more dangerous for Democrats is the news that 28 percent of Clinton supporters say they will vote for John McCain if Clinton is not the nominee and 19 percent of Obama supporters would abandon Clinton if she wins, according to the CNN poll.
While public opinion polls indicate the country remains opposed to the Bush Administration and the conditions are ripe for a Democrat to win the White House, some Democratic leaders fear the Clinton-Obama infighting could damage the party.
"Personal attacks demoralize the base," Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said on CNN this morning "We need to focus on Iraq, we need to focus on gas prices, on mortgages, we need to focus on the economy," he said. "These are the things the American people care about. They don't care about people bickering over pastors, over who said what in Bosnia."
Speaking in Fayetteville, North Carolina on Thursday, Clinton warned her supporters not to sit out the election. "Please think through this decision. It is not a wise decision for yourself or your country," she said. "There are, in my view, significant differences between Sen. Obama and myself, but those differences pale to the differences between us and Sen. McCain. I intend to do everything I can to make sure we have a unified Democratic party.
