Double standard? Frenchie Davis and David Hernandez get different treatment on American Idol
Staff Reporter | Posted March 4, 2008 11:46 AMDavis was removed from the show in 2003 after word leaked out that she had appeared on an adult web site, but last year Antonella Barba was allowed to stay in the contest after provocative photos of her were found on the Internet. This time the controversy is a little different.
The 24-year-old Hernandez once worked as a stripper at Dick's Cabaret, appearing fully nude and performing lap dances for the club's "mostly male" clientele, according to the Associated Press, which interviewed club manager Gordy Bryan on Monday.
Hernandez left his stripping job in the fall of 2007 after three years of working there, the AP reported. But before that, Hernandez reportedly worked as a bartender in a Phoenix gay bar called Rub and was involved in a relationship with another man for two to three years.
Working in a gay bar or being gay do not disqualify contestants from participating on American Idol, but nude stripping at a nightclub may raise some eyebrows from critics who wonder why Frenchie Davis didn't get treated more fairly five years ago.
No word yet from American Idol about what may happen to Hernandez. Hernandez is scheduled to perform when the show airs live tonight at 8 Eastern time on Fox.
