Obama takes 10 point lead in national poll
Staff Reporter | Posted March 31, 2008 10:24 AMA new Gallup Tracking Poll conducted March 27-March 29 shows Obama leading Clinton 52 to 42 percent, his largest lead of the year so far. Obama also leads Clinton in two other polls, giving him an average lead of 4.6 points over his primary opponent. The Illinois senator also holds a slight, but statistically insignificant lead over Sen. John McCain in the general election polls.
The news comes as some party leaders have called for Sen. Clinton to end her campaign, and the Clintons have steadfastly resisted those calls. Sen. Pat Leahy (D-VT), an Obama supporter, has called for Clinton to abandon her campaign, and Gov. Bill Richardson (D-NM) and Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) have indicated that Clinton has little chance of winning the nomination.
In an e-mail fundraising message sent to supporters, Bill Clinton rejected those calls. "Here's the most important thing you need to know about this race: it's neck-and-neck," he wrote, arguing that only 130 delegates separate Clinton from Obama and "the difference in popular vote is less than 1 percent."
The former president said that "millions of voters have yet to make their voices heard" and wrote that "this election should be about their choice."
With the end of the first quarter coming today, the Clinton campaign hoped to turn the negative into a positive by raising much-needed money, but new reports out over the weekend reveal that the Clinton campaign is cash strapped and slow to pay its bills to vendors and others. The campaign reported $8.7 million in debt, according to its most recent filings, as reported by UPI.
But the money woes did not deter Bill Clinton. "My family isn't big on quitting," he wrote. "Hillary's in this race to win."
