Rapper DMX hasn't heard of Obama
News Editor | Posted March 17, 2008 4:54 PM
This one is a little hard for us to believe. XXL magazine sat down with the rapper DMX recently, and he told the interviewer that he had never heard of Barack Obama. In the interview, which took place in January of 2008, the New York-based recording artist sounds surprised to learn there's a black man running for president.
When asked by journalist Clover Hope if he was following the presidential race, the 37-year-old DMX said "not at all." Then when asked what he thought of Barack Obama, DMX asked the reporter if the candidate's name was really Barack.
"What the f--- is a Barack?," he said. "Where he from, Africa?"
The reporter said yes, explaining that Obama's father was from Kenya, at which point DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, joked about the Obama family surname. "That ain't no f----- name, yo. That ain't that ni---'s name. You can't be serious. Barack Obama. Get the f--- outta here."
He continued: "Ima tell this n---- when I see him, 'Stop that bull----. Stop that bull----' [laughs] 'That ain't your f------ name. Your momma ain't name you no damn Barack.'"
The rapper, a convicted felon, is not eligible to vote, but that's not why he's avoiding the news about the campaign. "It doesn't matter," he said. "They're gonna do what they're gonna do. It doesn't really make a difference. These are the last years."
DMX is the 6th highest selling rapper of all time. But no matter what DMX has to say, Obama shouldn't necessarily take it personally. DMX also wasn't too impressed with the prospect of a female president. "I mean, either way it doesn't matter," he said. "I don't care. No one person is directly affected by which president, you know, so what does it matter?"

What a stupid idiot! This is why the African-American community moves at a snail's pace.
The sad part is that there are about twenty of him on each corner. I can only fault myself for even reading this article.
March 17, 2008 6:46 PM
Hunter,
His idiocy is not a function of his race. Truth be told, you can go on a corner or to a trailor park and find the same kinds of people. Low class is low class. But he is stupid...and a comedian too! Gospel Album! LMAO....
March 17, 2008 9:04 PM
Does DMX's ignorance really surprise anyone? I mean, really.
The unfortunate part is that someone equally as ignorant might try to link his stupidity to hip hop as a whole.
March 17, 2008 9:14 PM
LMAO! Who's idea was it to invite DMX to an intellectual conversation? I read this article, (and no, I don't subscribe to XXL) and the so-called journalist interviewing him doesn't sound like a bright bulb either.
March 17, 2008 10:34 PM
DMX is all the negatives of Black America rolled into one, he could'nt be dumber. Unfortunately we live in a society that rewards ignorance,i.e. Spears, Hilton, Lohan and Bush.
March 17, 2008 11:15 PM
Unfortunately Hunter your comment sounds as ignorant as DMX's by making a blanket statement about the whole African American community. I'm not calling you ignorant but just that comment. There are ignorant people (i.e. factually unencumbered) of all races and genders.
March 17, 2008 11:51 PM
Dudes on the corner cause u crackers bombed OUR communities with drugs for your devilish profits. Then yall screw up the educational system and when all americans suffer, you blame us.
March 18, 2008 10:11 AM
When you use drugs this is one of the side effect, in his attempt to prove that he is a 'thug' and 'gangster' it really shows that he is just another two bit no talent 'rapper' who has no clue about the real world. And, this Clover Hope should have known better than to ask him about anything other than guns, degrading women and making homophobic slurs in his so called 'music," since, that's all he seems to know. The real world, sorry, I wouldn't expect any 'rapper' to be able to tell who the current President is, let alone who is in the primaries.

Rappers like Common and Mos Def have plenty of knowlege, and have been putting out positive messages for years. Not all rappers are bad.
Rapper DMX regardless of race, gender, occupation or social background, is just an IGNORANT FOOL PERIOD. Unfortunately, he's not the only person of his kind out there. Now THAT'S a scary thought.

Well put Jaye...
But really, is anyone really surprised? Its DMX... I bet if we ask him about the Gospel Album he put out he wouldn't know about that either.
March 18, 2008 7:16 PM
If I were Clover Hope (the journalist interviewing DMX), I would have packed up my equipment and walked out right then and there, considering him to be someone not worth talking to, and a total waste of my time. If this is how pathetic he is, then he's right - in his case, "it really doesn't matter". What a disgusting brotha. Go On, DMX ! ! Show the world what a fool you are. Next ! !
March 18, 2008 9:19 PM
I think replacing his "name" in his statements sounds more appropriate:
What the fuck is a DMX?! DMX. Where he from, Africa?
Wow, DMX! The nigga’s name is DMX. DMX? Nigga named DEE EEEMM EECCKS. What the fuck, man?! Is he serious? That ain’t his fuckin’ name. Ima tell this nigga when I see him, “Stop that bullshit. Stop that bullshit” [laughs] “That ain’t your fuckin’ name.” Your momma ain’t name you no damn DMX. HE aint part of the Distributed Multihead X Project
-just goes to show how ridiculous he sounds.

@ sinaa
Well done.

Sinaa. appreciate the humor, but you should have left Africa out of it.

I'm not at all surprised at his comments !!! I probably wouldn't keep up with news and current events either if all I had time to do was roll blunts, oversee pit bull fights, see my probation officer and trying to "keep it real" !!! Ignorance at it's finest and a wonderful example of the "ghetto mentality" that pervades our people !!! This man is exactly what many in America and the world over believe black men repreesent and are !!! What a complete moron and fool !!! It's actually quite sad on so many levels !!!

Yes, it IS ridiculous that someone calling himself DMX has the odacity to make fun of Senator Obama's rightful name. There are people like him in every community. Has anyone asked Kid Rock what he thinks of Barak Obama?

this is truly a sad statement. How can this man be considered a highly regarded artist with a mentality of a five year old child who talks like he lived in 1808 and not 2008. I do not know whether to laugh or cry for this idiot!!
March 20, 2008 9:59 AM
I live in Harlem. When I see the billboard ad displays featuring light skinned black women in sexy poses along side very angry, hateful looking young black men advertising liquor, jewlery, sneekers or the latest hip-hop garbage to fill the heads of the youth that have not come in contact with the penal system so far I can not say I am shocked with the comments this monkey has made.
Keep in mind that if he did show one ounce of sense and showed the general public that the first thing he does not reach for when he wakes up in the morning is a blunt not only would his CD sales and popularity sink like a rock but his black ass would also spend more time behind bars than what he is currently gets when he gets arrested every other week.

Gosh!i can't believe this,is this man stays in states or rather in the world?i think the best we can do is to stop buying his music, anything that he owns because he's trying to undermine change that we believe in period
March 20, 2008 3:08 PM
rooney, said, "...the best we can do is to stop buying his music..."
You buy his music?!
March 21, 2008 1:44 PM
Cocaine is a helluva drug......
March 22, 2008 9:37 PM
I'm not going to insult the man or call him names.
Personally, I don't believe that he has never heard of Obama. If he hasn't, he's really been out of touch with what's happening.
March 22, 2008 10:15 PM
After seeing and hearing it for myself while watching "The View," Sherri Shepherd, one of the hosts, admitted, ON AIR, that she still believes that the Earth is FLAT. So, could DMX be telling the truth? Don't know. I'm just glad he does not represent those of us who are smart.
March 23, 2008 11:14 AM
"It doesn't matter," he said. "They're gonna do what they're gonna do. It doesn't really make a difference. These are the last years."
this statement speaks volumes. if he (and others who hold this sentiment) are content with being the passive recipients of whatever crumbs are thrown to them by the politcal elite, then cest le vie. *shakes head in disbelief*
March 24, 2008 9:12 AM
The most painful thing about this article is that DMX clearly insists on hating himself. It calls to mind the sceen in the movie "Roots" where the Fiddler told Kente that his name was Toby, and that he "wasn't no African."
It is a painful reminder of our collective acceptance of self-despise, period.
March 25, 2008 8:18 AM
DMX, please come out from under that rock and wake up. Perhaps this article will do it for you. But, if you don't care it really doesn't matter; except, some of us care about what is happening to our men who think they are "men"! This type of ignorance is really scarey.
March 26, 2008 10:11 AM
