Did Lou Dobbs call Condoleezza Rice a cotton picker?
Staff Reporter | Posted April 1, 2008 11:49 AMSpeaking in an on-air conversation with CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, Dobbs responded to recent comments by Secretary Rice that the issue of race was an original "birth defect" of the United States.
"Black Americans were a founding population," Secretary Rice said. "Africans and Europeans came here and founded this country together -- Europeans by choice and Africans in chains. That's not a very pretty reality of our founding...That particular birth defect makes it hard for us to confront it, hard for us to talk about it, and hard for us to realize that it has continuing relevance for who we are today," she said.
Rice's comments echo the remarks made by Sen. Barack Obama recently that race-based slavery was America's "original sin."
In answering a question from Blitzer about Rice's remarks, Dobbs launched into a brief monologue on race in America in which he attacked Rice and others who hold her beliefs.
"I think it's really unfortunate that Secretary of State Rice believes as she does," said Dobbs. "The fact is most Americans don't have a problem talking about race. What we have is a problem talking about race without fearing recrimination and distortion and someone using whatever comments are made for their own purposes," he said.
"The reality is, this is the most socially, ethnically, religiously, racially diverse society on the face of the earth," Dobbs told Blitzer. "Now, Wolf, we don't make enough of that in the national media. We listen to some idiot say you can't talk about race."
Then Dobbs almost got into trouble. Without interruption from Blitzer, he went on to chastise politicians who lecture America about race. And at one point he appeared to stop himself from labeling Rice and others as "cotton-picking" critics.
"And too often, in fact, nearly always, we fail to point out that there is no country on the face of the earth as progressive, as racially and ethnically diverse as our own," said Dobbs. "It's something for us to be proud of. We're living with the issue of race. We've gotta be able to talk about. And I can guarantee you this. Not a single one of these cotton-, ah, these just ridiculous politicians should be a moderator on the issue of race."
Critics jumped on the slip, accusing Dobbs of using racially insensitive language. One blog, on the Internet, even called him a "racist."
The video, posted on Sunday, Mar. 30, has already been viewed more than 113,000 times on YouTube. But the official transcript, posted by CNN, removes the word "cotton" from Dobbs's mouth.
