Last night she started using the Rocky theme song at her campaign events in Pennsylvania, the New York Times reported.
And she has introduced the Rocky theme into her stump speech. "Let me tell you something," she said at a speech today. "When it comes to finishing the fight, Rocky and I have a lot in common. I never quit. I never give up. And neither do the American people."
She's not the first politician to call on the legend of Rocky Balboa to inspire her campaign, but Sylvester Stallone's Rocky series has gone on for more than 30 years now, leading us to wonder which Rocky she's channeling with her message.
Is she the scrappy fighter in the original 1976 film who tries to take on the flashy black champion Apollo Creed? If so, we might find her any day now running up the steps of the Philadelphia Art Museum sporting a grey sweatsuit and a skull cap. Or maybe she'll be doing 1-handed pushups at her campaign rallies.
Or is Clinton the "great white hope" Rocky who stages an unexpected comeback against Creed (Carl Weathers) to win the title in Rocky II? And if she is Rocky, does that make Barack Obama into Apollo Creed?
It's unlikely Clinton is portraying herself as the rich and famous Rocky who as champion calls on an old nemesis, Creed, for training assistance for a title match in Rocky III. And given her recent feud with Sen. Barack Obama, it's hard to imagine Clinton as the fighter who avenges Creed's death to Russian strongman Ivan Drago (Dolph Lungren) in Rocky IV.
Maybe Clinton sees herself as the aging fighter in Rocky V who trains a talented protégé only to be betrayed by the trainee when he takes on the trainer. Or could it be that she see herself as the even older Rocky Balboa (aka Rocky VI) in the 2006 film who wants to prove himself one last time against a much younger black opponent.
Whichever Rocky storyline Clinton wants to evoke, at least the audience won't have to wait 30 years for the series to end. Pennsylvania holds its primary on April 22, three weeks from today.
