In an interview with journalist Bill Moyers, Wright said the attack on him was "unfair," "unjust" and "untrue," and "those who were doing that were doing it for some very devious reasons."
The pastor said he did not give political advice to Barack Obama and distinguished the Illinois senator's role from his own role.
"He's a politician. I'm a pastor," he said. "We speak to two different audiences."
The minister, who retired this year from his post as senior pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, also spoke about Obama's speech on race last month. "What happened in Philadelphia, where he had to respond to the soundbites, he responded as a politician," Wright said.
Wright accused his critics in politics and the media of using him to get at Obama and said that critics had distorted his words by playing brief soundbites over and over again to suggest that he was unpatriotic or unAmerican simply for criticizing problems with America.
"Those who are doing that are communicating exactly what they want to do, which is to paint me as some sort of fanatic," he said. The minister said the people pushing the soundbites want to suggest "something's wrong with me [but] there's nothing wrong with this country or its policies. We're perfect. Our hands are free. Our hands have no blood on them. We're perfect."
Wright said his critics "know nothing about our church" or about its prison ministry, help with senior citizens or efforts to feed the hungry.
The interview airs tonight on "Bill Moyers Journal" on PBS.
