Jeremiah Wright fires back at his critics
Staff Reporter | Posted April 28, 2008 2:23 AM
He's back. The Rev. Jeremiah Wright rounded off his weekend media tour with a nationally televised speech to 10,000 attendees at an NAACP dinner in Detroit on Sunday. It was the third time since Friday that the minister has drawn headlines for his remarks.
The Detroit News called it an "unapologetic speech" that was "alternately fiery and humorous." During his remarks, Wright mentioned the controversy over excerpts from his sermons that have been played repeatedly on television, but he defended himself and tried to explain how his role differs from those seeking public office.
"I am not running for the Oval Office. I have been running for Jesus for a long, long time, and I'm not tired yet," said Rev. Wright.
In a repeated theme throughout his address, Rev. Wright cited examples in which African Americans are treated differently from others because they look, think, act or speak differently. "Different is not deficient," said Wright.
Rev. Wright has been a subject of the presidential campaign ever since videos of the minister making controversial remarks surfaced on the Internet last month. Wright served as senior pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ, where Senator Barack Obama attends. But the pastor did not back down from his remarks at the NAACP event on Sunday, or during a televised interview with journalist Bill Moyers that aired on Friday.
During Friday's interview, Rev. Wright said his words had been twisted out of context. And before he spoke in Detroit Sunday night, Wright delivered a Sunday morning sermon to 4,000 people in Dallas in which he mentioned his own "public crucifixion," according to the Dallas Morning News.
Senator Obama acknowledged that the Rev. Wright story might be a distraction for his campaign, but in an interview on "Fox News Sunday," Obama said that people were "legitimately offended" by some of Wright's comments. "The fact that he is my former pastor I think makes it a legitimate political issue," Obama said.
John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, seized on Obama's comment. "Senator Obama himself says it's a legitimate political issue, so I would imagine that many other people will share that view and it will be in the arena," McCain said. That statement seemed to represent an about face from McCain's gesture last week in which he contacted the North Carolina Republican Party to ask them not to run an advertisement attacking Obama for his association with Rev. Wright.
But if anyone thought the issue was going away soon, they were wrong. Wright's speech was televised in full on CNN and then discussed extensively on the air afterwards Sunday night. And Wright is scheduled to speak to the National Press Club on Monday.

He's not relevant to much and if his ego were in check and he was smart, he would lay low for the greater good.
But can a Black preacher do that? Hells2TheNaw. Ego Trippin', that's this guy, it's his moment in his eye and he's got to shine. Great for him, not for Obama.
Media & some White people need "fuel" and "fodder" to tear down the Black man.....and this dumb negro (J Wright) steps up and feeds the machine.
It's not about him, it's about Obama, but you can't tell this fool this can you? Nope, he thinks he's relevant. Well...he is. He's very important and relevant for Hillary and McCain.
We need this ol foolish dumb negro to come forward like this to solidify torpedo'ing Obama election hopes against McCain in the Fall.
That's the common goal of Hillary and McCain after all. Thanks J Wright, fool that you are.
Hillary 2012!
April 28, 2008 6:36 AM
Annon I say ditto to your comments.
Yes this is america and we do have freedom of speech but this man is now making Farrakhan look like Santa Claus. At least Farrakhan and Sharpton for the most part are staying out of this election because they know what their comments would cause.
It's obvious whatever deal he (Rev Wright) was offered to shut up wasn't good enough and Barrak's opponents offered a better one. I am seeing more into this than what is being printed in the press.
Good luck Barrak. I am still hoping the best for you.

Rev. Wright last night was "Perfect." Why is it that most White and some black in this country don't like to hear the truth? Most of these people who are criticizing and Rev. Wright and use it against Obama, would've never voted for Obama anyway. And for those of you who keep on saying "if Rev. Wright was Smart"-He is one of the smartest man, this country can ever produce. As rev. Wright said last night, different does not mean defficient. Like any American, I believe he has the right to speak as he feel and defend himself. AMERICA NEED TO STOP BEING SO DAMN HYPOCRITE.
April 28, 2008 8:26 AM
I am A Roman Catholic and I do not ascribe to all the precepts that are on doctrinal but are a part of the preaching and teaching of the Priests. I would be highly insulted if some one should suggest that I leave my Church, including the pope.
It is sad and unfortunate that Rev Wright has to play the role of distracting us from the legitimate issues which he proclaims to espouse and fight for. I find his recent behavior reprehensible and arrogrant. He gives the media and racists the cover to hide behind his bravado rather than confront their on racism. Hilary and McCann can be quiet and let Mr. Wright do their dirty work.
"I know there's a God."
April 28, 2008 9:12 AM
iam a roman catholic and i wont leave my church just because some dumb ass want to touch kids.so by any mean the lord say forgive them because they don't know what are they doing.so i give wright the chance because someday i gonna be judge and i can't judge no one
April 28, 2008 9:52 AM
While I found his speech to be quite eloquent and put the bigots in their place with a truth they don't want to hear and those who claim there is no such thing as racism in this country in or out of the so called churh and daily life, yeah right, it went away 40 years ago, he really needs to keep his mouth shut for a while. This country is not now, nor will it ever be able and ready to deal with racism head on.
April 28, 2008 10:12 AM
If a vote for Obama = having this guy take the stage and have a voice the media places on the stage? No thanks.
Who wants to hear this for 4 years? It's not about the merits of the content of his speech, they are valid,...it's about Wright imposing himself onto the public.
Wright clearly LOVES to hear himself. I agree with his words, but he in and of himself is just an annoying personality.
My concern is I am going to have to hear and see this annoying personality if Obama is in office and that strikes like a major pain in the ass.
Plus, I really dislike self-promoters who claim their motivation is "God" and wrapped in their duties to "God", etc. when in truth they're self-promoting.
The real servants of God are the Mother Teresa types, that quietly do, serve, and help....not the classic preachers that are big in shouting, hollaring, etc.
April 28, 2008 10:46 AM
I hope that the majority of the blacks on this website talking about "if he was smart" take a long look in the mirror. What does it mean to be black in america? It means that having other blacks in america such as the reverend wright be smeared and silenced in the media. This man is one of the MOST intelligent men in america, so I definitely don't think its an issue of him being deficient at all. Like he said in his beautiful NAACP speech DIFFERENT DOES NOT MEAN DEFICIENT, nor does it mean SUPERIOR, nor does it mean INFERIOR. It simply means that ONE IS DIFFERENT. And the Reverend Jeremiah Wright IS DIFFERENT. He is a black man born of the civil rights movement who knows the atrocities that hide in america's closets. And if he wants to go about preaching and teaching in his own DIFFERENT way then i'm sorry but white america is just going to have to deal with it. He is one of the most respected black or other pastors in the united states. And listening to him speak was touching, inspiring, and hopeful. No wonder Barack Obama is half the politician he is today, He clearly LEARNED IT FROM JEREMIAH WRIGHT. Keep on preaching man! Even though some uncle tome black folks out there think you should go into self imposed exile! Keep speaking for change, keep rattling the cage! A CHANGE IS COMING! A CHANGE IS INDEED COMING!

@ anonymous
"The real servants of God are the Mother Teresa types, that quietly do, serve, and help....not the classic preachers that are big in shouting, hollaring, etc."
Are you insane? First of all the good ole MOTHER TERESA is on record as being partially agnostic, cuz sometimes she didnt even believe in the god she served. Just like Wright said last night. DIFFERENT DOES NOT MEAN DEFICIENT and just becuz he goes about serving and witnessing for his god in a different way then miss meek mommy teresa does not mean that he is not a REAL SERVANT of God? What the hell is a real servant of god? Oh let me guess. Not a black man? From the black theology tradition? Wow. How dare you insult the legacy of black pastors like that. If it wasnt for some of those black pastors your butt would be sitting on your high horse right now. Yapping at the mouth! A CHANGE IS COMING!
April 28, 2008 11:17 AM
Preach on it Floridaboy! Rev Wright tells a truth that many don't want to hear, but, at this point in time he has done more harm to Obama than the race baiting Clinton's, so, oh well, 4 more years of GOP rule a war that can't be won, an economy in the pits and $5 dollar a gallon gas, many losing homes to foreclosures, thanks Hillary, between you and your sense of some sick entitlement for the nomination and Wright, you have destroyed the Democratic party and the chance for change.
April 28, 2008 11:48 AM
@ Mrs Mavis Gibson
The real people destroying the democrats chance to bring about change is so called democrats who keep voting out of their own interest. The same DEMS in OHIO who voted for bush in 00 and 04 voted for Clinton. Even though they voted twice out of their interest. But they wonder why they have no jobs to speak of. They wonder why their state economy is one of the lost in the united states. Hello your state went overwhelmingly for BUSH. Ohio you have no one to be mad at BUT YOURSELF! The same for PA why did they vote for NAFTA supporting clinton when she is one of the reasons why they losing all they precious blue collar jobs. Blue Collar dems are RUINING democrats chance. They refuse to vote for a black man EVEN IF HE HAS A WHITE MAMA becuz he is soo "DIFFERENT". The fact that Hillary is richer than any of them will ever be. They still feel like she is "ONE OF THEM". So until blue collar democrats start voting for DEMOCRATS who can help they BITTER asses and yes I said bitter cuz thats what they are. The dems are gonna lose everytime. If Barack goes against MCcain those same blue collar democrats that Barack cannot win over are gonna vote out of their interest for the white man who is more like them.
Reverend Wright is not the problem. Its admitted racist voting out of their own economic and social interest. TIME AND TIME AGAIN!
April 28, 2008 12:10 PM
I am a black american and I am an aethist. America allows me to say it aloud if I choose to. To each his own in regards to a creator, a god, the easter bunny or santa claus. Say what you want because you can in this great country. If it is that bad and you honestly do feel that oppressed you do not have to stay.
This man now stands right along with the Rev Hagee, the late Rev Jerry Fallwell, Rev Pat Robertson, Rev Oral Roberts, ol' Bishop Eddie Long, Rev. Jessie Jackson (who really wasn't a reverend until it was learned that he never finished theology college) and all the other speakers (charlatans) of the word of this so called god. They are all opportunist who grab media attention by any means necessary for their own political and financial gain and they all know it. The longer the exposure the harder it is to get them to go away.
Rev. Wright is not saying anything that any black american over the age of 10 years old did not know all along and he and his supporters know it. Is it really necassary to go around on a borderline nationwide tour with this foolishness?
It is sad when educated black people who know that politicians have to kiss up to groups that they normally would not associate with (but whose vote they do need) would encourage foolishness such as this at this VERY CRITICAL time in the primaries. Would it have honestly killed Rev. Wright to cut it short at the NAACP convention?
What has happened to our sensibilites? Someone needs to point out to this man that Rev. Hagee and other white preachers are BEHIND THE SCENES for McCain. They are not out screaming and shouting in front of every camera that will hold still long enough for them to perform.
Rev Wright please go and sit your ass down somewhere and not kill the only credible chance we black folk have had come along in quite awhile.
April 28, 2008 1:07 PM
What a smuck! Does he not realize that there is a bigger picture we need to me looking at.
Now Rev. Wright and this racial stuff is back in the media, which is not good for Obama.
I agree with alot of what Wright has said, but I also know when its time to shut up, sit back, and get our man in office.
April 28, 2008 3:17 PM
Unfortunately, there are people who go to churches and are brainwashed or impressed with everything the preacher, priest or whomever has to say without questioning the sermon or teachings for themselves and that seems to be the vast problem with being unable to separate Barack from Wright. I give Senator Obama the benefit of having the intelligence to make his own decisions. These same types of issues surfaced when JFK was running for President. Small minds thought that because he was Catholic he would be greatly influenced by the Pope at that time. History has shown otherwise.
April 28, 2008 3:49 PM
You are so right MrFAMU, the so called Reagan "democrats" and ethnic "white" voters, and, Latino's who have issues with Obama, and, for only one reason his skin color in states like Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan get what they vote for, and, if they think those jobs are going to come back because of some lie told to them by McCain, HRC or anyone else deserves to be broke and bitter. Its a shame that these voters are so easily duped by these politicians, but, race is always what matters, and, sadly, this whole nomination process has fallen to race only and some preacher who has told a truth that they don't want to hear, and, not issues, thanks Bill and Hillary, you two are worse than Rove.
I say go ahead and vote becuase you are a racist, its your right, but, don't expect any bail outs or help, because boos, McCain isn't going to give them to you anymore than Bush has, and, has no power to "bring back jobs" than I do.
April 28, 2008 4:25 PM
I can't believe the comments some of you are making concerning Rev. Wright..I understand that politically it is about Obama but perhaps you aren't understanding that they've used portions of his sermon(out of context of course) to make not only Obama look bad but also to discredit Rev. Wright. I believe he has the right to respond to the false allegations against him and defend the truth that he ministers in Jesus's name. I don't care who doesn't favor the truth, in the end it's still the truth and Obama ought to be ashamed of himself to distance or denounce the remarks his Pastor made in the videos. America is subject to the sowing and reaping principle too and when you do evil things in our Government, it is reaped upon our nation. God is still associated with righteousness and the actions of this countries' leadership isn't always righteous when it comes to how she treats her citizens. I understand what the spirit of God desires to achieve through Rev. Wright and hopefully men will listen and understand. May God be with us all.
April 28, 2008 6:21 PM
Once again some of us on this site just don't get it. Rev. Wright may be speaking the truth but in the end he is doing more harm than good.
Barack Obama's campaign would sink because of this man. Hillary and McCain have nothing to do with this, they can just sit back and watch. For all his service to this country and his congregation, Rev. Wright is an opportunist like everyone else. The good god fearing Reverend is now on a media tour across the country promoting his book at the expense of Obama. The Reverend's moment in the spotlight has come. No doubt his books would sell but we live in America and his words would be twisted by the other side, what do you expect? It's politics as usual and it worked in Ohio for George Bush and it will work again this time for John McCain.
So speak the truth Reverend!!!
April 28, 2008 7:59 PM
I hear ya, Floridaboy. Speak! It's amazing and profoundly sad to see so many Black folk who have that "I Don't Wanna Upset The White Folk," Sambo mentality.
Don't blame Rev. Wright for America's bad case of denial. Rev. Wright is not saying anything that's untrue. The media's cleverly calculating and too-heavy concentration on him, while Hillary's questionable affiliations still purposely remain dormant, is a true attest that this American society is quite racist. It's not Rev. Wright's fault. He's just calling it what it is. And it is an even more sadder reality that Obama just may have to quietly distance himself from his own pastor because of America's mentality. So much so, that they are even questioning Rev. Wright's choice to use the Nation of Islam as bodyguards. Blame the mindset of America, not Rev. Wright. In essense, to make it in mainstream America, you have to do things or say things that'll make whites feel more comfortable with you, and that includes having a bad case of denial, naivety, and sometimes a willingness to compromise your cultural identity. So, in a society like that, are we really free? No!
April 28, 2008 8:47 PM
He may be speaking the truth, but, none of us will benefit from him doing so. He couldn't have kept his thoughts to himself until after this election??? He has angered these white folks more than they have been in years about blacks and while its not that hard to tick them off on black issues, they are foaming at the bit, and, that's never a good thing, since, they still have all the power. And, with CNN and MSNBC showing him 24/7 and more than Fixed News, that speaks as to how ticked off they are. Eevn the only Republican I've ever heard say there is racism in this counry in 2008 Huckabee is saying he is a nut and that can only help McCain. he has all but destroyed any chance of O getting the nomination to the delight of camp Clinton, who could have saved all that race baiting and kept thier racism private.
April 28, 2008 9:31 PM
@ Darnell...
Who cares if he is ticking off white people? They need to be ticked off. Why are people so inept to REVOLUTIONARY CHANGE? I would hate for some of ya'll to have lived during the civil rights movement because you would have thought the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was a PLUM FOOL. Listen to what you are saying young black men and women. NOTHING BUT GOOD CAN COME OF THIS. This man is speaking the truth and the chains are rattling for a REVOLUTIONARY CHANGE. At this point I dont care if Barack wins or loses because a CHANGE IS COMING in this country! If a more than qualified black man can't win this countries presidency solely because he went to a black church and was mentored by a BLACK PASTOR that comes from a tradition of BLACK PASTORS. WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT THIS COUNTRY? Who among us is qualified to lead this country? I attend a black church, I grew up in a black church, my uncles and aunts are pastors, my pastor speaks like REVEREND WRIGHT DOES. Am I not ever qualified to be the president of the united states? The whole reverend wright scandal is showing that the media shows that which it doesnot understand as a LIABILITY! Like SPIKE LEE's film SCHOOL DAZE people we need to WAKE UP! A change is coming! We all benefit from Reverend Wrights bravery, intelligence, service to mankind, and above all his HONESTY! No inspiration when you see it people. No change when its coming people!
April 29, 2008 2:58 AM
As much as I enjoy the dialog and fully respect Rev Wright, I really just want him to STFU until after Election Day. I want a Democrat to win the election. I'd rather it be Obama than Hillary. The damage that Wright is creating is not only going to affect Obama but any black that tries to run for president again. Hell, it's going to affect any politician, regardless of race, who is associated with Wright. He's positioning himself next to Farrakhan faster than he realizes. I'm sure Pastor Manning from Harlem's jealous that Wright's getting more press coverage ruining Obama's campaign than he wants to have.
This is yet another example of how religion and politics should never ever mix and the importance of separation between church and state.
April 29, 2008 6:18 AM
Mr. FAMU I have said before and I am saying once again this man is saying absolutely nothing that any black person who has been in the third grade should not already know.
Even though I had just entered school at the signing of the civil rights (act) I remember things being a whole lot different and nowhere near as tragic and pathetic when compared to how things stand now in the black communities throught the country. I honestly do not want to hear this man going on and on with this foolishness because it is no ones fault but ours (black folks) that we have not progressed much, much further than we have.
For you, a person who claims to remember that era and are now sitting back and enjoying watching the destruction of a very well deserving black man's chance to at least have a shot at the presidency means we have a much more serious educational problem in the community than is feared by most other black people.
Last night I watched his speech given at the NAACP convention on C-SPAN. Yes it was given like a typical negro preacher with an all black congregation at a black church. The theatrics, speech and all were present. No I did not find what he said offensive but to have what he said broadcast to white america in that manner sure as hell could have beem done without.
It is now reaching the point where he is sounding like a teenager in the ghetto who is walking past a group of boys who he knows don't like him and he has his little brother with him. One of them calls him a punk. He is not going to rest until he has gotten up in every last one of their faces and proved he is not. The boys fight. A crowd gathers. Many in the crowd cheer him on because they don't like this particular group of boys either. Others in the crowd are telling him to stop and think about his little brothers safety.
Unfortunately neither he nor his supporters in the crowd watching the fight are paying much attention to what might happen the next day when his little brother has to walk past this same group of boys by himself. He (the older brother)beats the crap out of one or two of them. The ones he could not fight turn their attention on his little brother and his little brother pays dearly because his very hard headed older brother had to prove he was no punk. The crowd already knew he was not but he was not going to rest until he proved it at his little brothers expense. Was it really worth it? In my opinion I must say NO IT WAS NOT.
At such a critical time in black american political history this man needs to find a quiet place and sit his ass down. HE HAS SAID MORE THAN ENOUGH.
April 29, 2008 6:34 AM
Wright's a typical out of control Negro of the old guard jealous of the younger generation (Obama) getting the attention.
Egomaniac as all hell. He literally said whatever happens to Obama in the Fall happens, he (Wright) will be fine.
Self focused, self interested typical Negro Preacher who thinks it is all about him. It's not. I live in Los Angeles, never heard of this old Negro before now.
He acted very Coonish, Very much like a stereotypical grinning N_____. Like he's the smartest person in the room. That's what he thinks.
His language, his delivery, please, I've seen it a thousand times from shucking and jiving Negro preachers, Wright is no different. He strikes me as the kind of old negro that insist he be relevant.
It's not about him, he does not understand that. So what does this N______ do? He is the #1 hope of Hillary and McCain to damage Obama.
Congratulations Rev Wright, you're keeping it rrrreeeaallll. Real dumb, like a typical self focused N________.
I can't believe you Black people in Chicago have flocked to this clown.
April 29, 2008 7:33 AM
It is clear that Mr. Wright is a Clinton and McCann supporter. I can not take him seriously. It is sad that he is so sick and self-centered that he is trying to destroy another person in the name of Jesus. What more can I say, only that after his present behavior I cannot imagine him as a pastor and minister of the Gospel. Any clergy person would tell you that God does not like it when you abuse those he sent you to serve, so if I were the Rev.I would seek the mercy and compassion God has shown me in the past and shut up.
April 29, 2008 9:25 AM
I am so tired of the Rev Wright story until my head hurts. The media is to blame for this. Everyday on Joe Scarbrough, Hannity, Limbaugh, and all the other news bullies brought this man's name up at least 50 time in a broadcast and he felt he had to fight back and I don't blame him. The soundbites that were submitted were proven to be taken out of context and neither of the news stations were willing to say this is not what this man said. They were willing to go on mis-reporting and just flat out lying. Hannity, really wanted to get this story out and I guess he is some where laughing at the chaos he has caused. The reality of it all is Black churches deal with issues that concern the Black cause. I really think the shame of it all is that in 2008 their is still a conversation about race and people like Rev Wright has dedicated his life to being on the front line and his life has been summed up in soundbites. I wish the media would leave this man alone he certainly has done more for his race and community than they have.
April 29, 2008 11:39 PM
I am sick of it too Cynthia.
Too bad Rev. Wright allowed himself to be played. Whites have been pitting blacks against each other for centuries - even during slavery they would use one slave to snitch on the others - especially when they thought an escape was being planned.
Jeremiah played right into the hands of the racist Clinton regime. He should have waited til the campaign was over and wrote a best-selling book. He is nothing more than a media whore who should be ignored. Why does the media lend credence to this pulpit bully. He has nothing important to say, but the news media have made him a household word. Why!? If you ignore the troll, he will go away. He doesn't have sense enough to come in out of the rain. Besides, he's a media whore who is jealous of Obama. For the past few weeks Rev. Wright has been criss-crossing the country preaching at various church and making tons of money. He is taking full advantage of Obama and the media. He should, we let him.
