Jimmy Carter hints at Obama support
Staff Reporter | Posted April 3, 2008 9:20 AM
Former president Jimmy Carter, the only living Democratic president other than Bill Clinton, has hinted that he will support Barack Obama for president. Carter, a superdelegate, dropped the hint during an interview with an African news outlet in Nigeria.
During a media interaction following the Carter Center Awards in Abuja, Nigeria, the former president did not endorse Obama but indicated that his family and his state were supporting the Illinois senator for president.
"We are very interested in the primaries," Carter said. "Don't forget that Obama won in my state of Georgia. My town which is home to 625 people is for Obama, my children and their spouses are pro- Obama. My grandchildren are also pro- Obama. As a superdelegate, I would not disclose who I am rooting for, but I leave you to make that guess," he said.

I am not on the university level as are many of you other black folks who comment on this site are but I do question the wisdom of bringing this man into the picture when there are so many undecided black voters still out there.
Remeber that the U.S. saw its first bought of hyperinflation and military embarrassments (the Iran fiasco and the Soviet invasion of Afaganistan on Christmas day) during his watch. And let's not forget his political lynching by Ronald Regan at the debate.
I honestly don't think this posting was necessary nor helpful to Obama.
April 3, 2008 9:57 AM
Brucito,
You questioning why Carter "may" support Obama considering that there are many undecided black voters out there?
Please explain.
Also, don't insult your own intelligence.
Brucito vs. university level black folk.

Carter has been one of the best representative for this country in the past 8 years when there was no one else to show that the USA wasn't this evil empire that most of the world see's, he is widely respected, so, his endorsement will help, and, it is yet another smack down for HRC, no one wants to hop on that sinking ship. And, remember, Obama is running for all people, not just black ones, just like not only black people read this site.
April 3, 2008 11:09 AM
Ok Xx. Here is why I think what I think.
Obama is smart. However no president can be successful unless he has a cabinet with him that will see to it that he stays successful.
Carter came to us at time where the nation was exhuasted by back to back republican administrations (Nixon,Ford) that did more to harm than good to the nation. Watergate and Gerald Ford's pardoning of Nixon even though over half of the republicans themselves were calling Nixon's head on a platter becasue not even they could defend Nixon and his belligerence anymore.
Since Carter left office many blacks have become very successful in the business world and are well aware of what can happen when people are more concerned with change than they are with proven established records. Mainly what does this person know about business. They too are going to listen closely when the absolute failures of Mr. Carter are now making headlines. (Remember anything that can get attached to Obama regardless of it's relevency is going to get attached. (Don't forget the taboloid gay scandal supposedly done in his youth).
And now here comes a black man who is untested in foreign policy and only 1 term in the senate and to top it off a democrat. This is already looking more like a anyone but Hillary campaign to me and Obama is the best bet. Resurrecting memories of ol'Jimmy is mot the smartest thing to do in my opinion. What are your thoughts?
April 3, 2008 11:37 AM
Brucito, your logic is confusing.
There is a possibility that Carter will endorse Obama. Regardless of who he chooses (Obama or Clinton) the majority of Americans would see the endorsement as important. He is well-respected around the world and his humanitarian efforts have not been left unnoticed.

Brucito, (I'm a WF, 38 yo, and very pro-Obama.) My .02 on Carter. He's the first president that I actually remember. And while I wasn't crazy about him at the time, I think what he has done since his presidency is great. He has been an ambassador for the world, and I admire his global work with Habitat for Humanity. He shows other countries that there are people in the US that do care about the whole world. I think his endorsement would be great!

"And now here comes a black man who is untested in foreign policy and only 1 term in the senate and to top it off a democrat. " ---this would be an affront to common sense? Show me any Bush fanatic supported a man who entered office with no experience internationally, with preordained international agendas -- that have led us to today. Our beloved America is fast becoming morally bankrupt. Our credibility is called into question everytime our generals beg for assistance from allies and Nato troops. And an unchecked assault on civil liberties, due process and the most fundamental concepts of America - transparent government.... So, for that Bushies, I will show you any Obama supporter who rationally can gauge the prowess of the man who challenges our conceptions of the role of government.
He promises to engage purported enemies of America and challenges us to expect more. Not more of the same, but more of our elected office. Obama's cabinet already promises to be visionary and deep in experience.
We have a choice. More of the same to a certain degree with Hillary. (Who I lost track of when she lost track of her embellishments) and then we have more of the same, Bush style politics that is. Let's call is Bush Version 2.0. (Lite- Half the carbs, more of the punch!)
What truly surprises me is that a second term of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld administration has not soured our taste buds for more punishment. It seems we've let charlatans poseurs donning patriotic pins dictate what it means to be American, to us. It's a sermon better administered to preacher than the flock. Unapologetic Karl Rove/Cheney-esque tactics to call those critical of the White House as unpatriotic has created such a rift in the country, that we need irradiation from this cancerous mentality. It doesn't have to be "If you're not with us, you're against us" - why can't it be "Why aren't you with us, how can we do this together?".
Food for thought:

Oh Mamma since you were around when he was in office I noticed that you as I can not point to one success story involving Carter while he was in office.
He has proven to be an excellent statesman out of office I admit. It was while he was in office that was the problem. The man was a complete.
Xx thank you for responding. Have a nice night. I would rather you go to sleep with an unconfused mind.
April 3, 2008 6:42 PM
Zack you have to remember that a presidents policy's are more or less shaped by his advisers. That is what really did Carter in.
His national security adviser Zbigniew Brzensky was hated by damned near everyone who breathed the same air as he did and he more or less held Carter hostage because no one else wanted the job because Carter stood for nothing.
And don't forget that mistake named Burt Lance over at the treasury who was gone after the first year. Let's face it it was awful.
Carter was a good man. He was just not a good president. I am not a Bushie. I am a black independent. I am not saying this to promote Hillary. I just think his endorsement (which reminds people of his administration)causes more harm than good in the mind of business people.
April 3, 2008 7:13 PM
Duly Noted. Point conceded.
By the way, this wasn't to disparage your stance or to say you're a Bushie.
I'm so invigorated that the younger generation and independents and 'indifferent' are taking interest in these primaries!
All the best to all of us!

I read the above. I am speechless. What can we do about this? Can we do anything about this? Are we that spineless a nation to leave a woman unaided like this?
Sorry to derail the thread....

Zack thanks for posting that link to the Bush wars. I saw it on tv last week and can not for the life of me understand why does Condoleeza not hang her head in shame when she appears in public.
A Sec Of Defense who is the last to get told anything (and sometimes not at all)from a man who is under her control (Paul Bremmer) and publicly bypasses her is a downright disgrace. At least Colin Powell had the guts to pack up and leave when he refused to be treated that way. I think the term pick-a-ninny applies here.
I honestly do love this site. It is so nice to communicate with people who for the most part want to share knowledge and not just come off as a smart mouth sarcastic ass while sharing nor explaining anything tangible. I have ran across more than my share here lately but I still respect their right to say it.

-----CLINTON SLEEZE FATIGUE WILL INVIGORATE GOP, DISPIRIT DEMOCRATS AND SINK DEMOCRATIC TICKET-----
-----OBAMA/EDWARDS TO WIN-----
It is possible that Senator Clinton is the best candidate. However, even though many may like the policies that Senator Clinton proposes, they should also consider her record, just as Senator Clinton insists.
.
The last Clinton Administration, when faced with the fact that protection rackets where assaulting, torturing and murdering people with poison and radiation, chose to avoid its responsibilities to incarcerate the criminals and to protect the citizenry.
.
Instead, they made a deal with the criminal gang stalker protection rackets to leave them alone and to consequently abandon the citizenry.
.
Do we want a President who sells out the citizenry for votes?
.
Do we want a President who sends a "crime does pay" message to society?
.
Would you vote for a President who signed nonaggression deals with the KKKlan or the Nazi party? Gangs that torture with poison and radiation are much like the KKKlan and Nazi Party.
.
We do not need a sellout President. We need a principled leader President.
.
If you are one of the few who do not know what the above refers to, do a web search for “gang stalking” to see the tip of the dirtberg. Please do it before you decide to reply to my post. Here let me make it easy for you: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22gang+stalking%22.

Avraam Jack if you are going to play half-ass investigative reporter then at least try to show a balanced report. KKK and Nazi party be damned they do not even come close to what is staring people right in the face and they don't see it.
You make no mention (and not by accident) of a private but the VERY POWERFUL AND HEAVILY ARMED SECURITY FIRM named BLACKWATER. Remember them? That's the one still in Iraq that opened fire on several cars and have killed numerous civilians in Iraq and for a very brief minute made the headlines in the U.S. press.
What the hell would a firm need 9000 acres of private land in North Carolina for? The purpose of thise firm was suppose to be to protect U.S. diplomats but you would think (or at least I do)that they would be on a militay base traing with the military. They are ex-militay who are take only ex-military for their personell. After the administration changes (or if the administration changes)what will their purpose be?
If you want a conspiracy theory to write about here is a new project that you can get started on. This story had made 60 minutes, Fox, CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC and the seemingly never ending line of other cable and radio (yes it still exist)news outlets.
I doubt YOU will because they are operating with the blessing of a Republican adminstration.
