Maya Angelou stars in Hillary Clinton ad
Staff Reporter | Posted April 30, 2008 1:26 PM
"Hillary Clinton is the prayer of every American who really longs for fair play," says Angelou.
While seated on a stage next to Clinton, Angelou says: "Working men and women have had their jobs snatched from underneath them, their homes snatched away from them. And what we need, I think, is a person, a president, who can make a difference in our country."
Angelou continues: "She intends to help our country become what it can become. She dares to say human beings are more alike than we are unalike. I watched her become interested in public health and in education for all the children, and I watched her stand. I have found the person I think will be the best president for the United States of America."
The 60-second ad will run in North Carolina, which holds its primary on Tuesday, May 6.

I wonder how many of HRC's base, Latino's, poor whites and white women will even care what she says or even knows who she is? She isn't a 'prayer' for this voter, she is my worse nightmare along with any rational voter in the country.
April 30, 2008 1:23 PM
Slave owners never had trouble finding one N*##er to tell the rest of the Blacks how good they had it with their Master.
Thanks Maya for keeping the tradition of the true N*##er alive and well.

I will comment again Maya Angelou is a great woman and a great American. She is an excellent role model for all peoples. Maya Angelou is amongst the finest of people. I cannot commend Angelou enough for her long lifetime stuggle to excellence.
Maya Angelou is truly a historic heroine. She has accomplished more during her life than almost any of us will ever accomplish. I love the woman and I find those who degrade her character to be only worthy of my contempt.

Yuri1983 I agree. The only thing missing is the Aunt Jemimah rag around her nappy.........I'm outta here.
April 30, 2008 2:24 PM
That’s right Mrs Mavis, Yuri1983 and brucito show America how intelligent and diverse Obama’s supports are by calling people names and being ignorant. That’s the sprit. While you are doing that, show America how stupid blacks are for disrespecting our own great poets and inspirational leaders. You are # 1! I hope all those Latino’s, poor whites and white women put McCain/Bush in the office because of your wonderful efforts. Keep up the good work.
April 30, 2008 2:41 PM
1914inches...since when did the comments of some become the beliefs of all?? Victim of group-think, huh?? If people want to be ignorant, oh well. Don't follow the herd and think everyone’s alike.
And even if those people who mad those ignorant comment about Maya Angelou, it's their OPINION. Sounds like you're experiencing a bit of self-hate with the "show America how stupid blacks are" line.
And why do Obama supporters supposedly represent him....but Clinton's supporters are INDIVIDUALS merely endorsing her?? Geraldine Ferraro anyone?
April 30, 2008 3:07 PM
1914inches please tell me the name of one black male politician Aunt Jemimah(I'm sorry I meant to say Aunt Maya)here, has ever come out and campaigned for? And keep in mind I did say black male.
April 30, 2008 3:24 PM
Self-hate? are you serious. Now you sound like the rest of the Black Obama supporters who think that every Black person who supports a white person over a Black is self-hating. I was being sarcastic and you know it. I am a very proud African American MAN, i love my race and my culture so much as so i will always be able to
express CONSTRUCTIVE criticism in order to hold my own people up the HIGHEST standard! No apologies. That’s why I question Obama as I do Clinton on everything. If we are going to have the first Black President, then he WILL be the BEST PRESIDENT in history, not just someone we knew for less then a year and we see a “chance” in. I, like all Black men will rejoice in the day a brother takes a sit in that oval office. The dreams and hopes of my fathers will come true. If that time comes this November then I will be behind him 100% and happy…if it does not…then I know there will be another chance. Barack is not the end all- be all!
April 30, 2008 3:38 PM
brucito - why does it matter is she EVER comes out in support of a black male candidate. She needs to be supporting the person for HER best interest bested on her needs and on the facts. Yes, it would be nice if that person were black but oh well. We are supposed to be getting over race. That does not mean white people get over it, it also goes for us. Thats the sole reason why pastors like Wright have got to take a seat now and let the young Black folk speak for them now. This is the present not the past.
April 30, 2008 3:38 PM
I never said supporting someone outside your race made you self-hating. Criticizing someone because their opinion makes an entire race "look bad" is crazy. When that race happens to be yours, it's called group-think and is a product of self-hate. Period.
It amazes me how important Obama'a race is to Clinton's black supporters. If that's not a factor then why do they always bring it up?? And if Obama becomes the first black president...that's fine. He can't be judged as "the BEST PRESIDENT in history" until he's proven himself to be.
April 30, 2008 4:17 PM
With everyone of HRC 'supporters' its all about race and they have not been shy in saying so to anyone who asks them, she and her old man started the race trash and its going to come back to haunt her and the DNC for years to come. They made sure issues were not important, just skin color and anyone who votes for that low of a person really needs a lesson in morals, something HRC and her old man have never had.
Maya A, just pray for her, its obvious that she like all the black women who hate Obama have issues with black men. But, they will be looking even more sour and bitter than they are with these silly posts when McCain is elected, because, in the real world, HRC has less of a chance than Obama has, and, the GOP will make sure of it.
April 30, 2008 4:51 PM
1914 or 15 inches or whatever the hell your name is I already knew that neither you nor anyone else were going to be able to answer that question. However if anyone out there can name one black male politician that she came out and campaigned for like this I am all ears.
This woman went around back in the day preaching to the world the oppressions of blacks here in america and how black people should educate themselves and so forth and so on. It is obvious by her actions now that the time is here to put her money where her mouth once was she was really promoting that book she had written about how the cage negro needs to sit down or something or other along those lines (I think). I am sure I will be corrected by those who think I am going to care or change my mind.
Now a black man comes along. A black man who not only stayed out of the penal system but went to college, married one of his own kind and started a family. A black man who got elected to the SENATE and is a very serious presidential candidate who is capturing a lot of the white vote.
And what does this old house..............She should be proud that someone out there who held her foo....poetry in high regard listened to her and the other black leaders about staying out of jail and educating themselves and starting families. He is now poised to show those who are still disenfranchised that in america there is hope. Does he get the support of one of the loudest black female critics of the black male? Oh no, note one word of support from this old hou.........
At her advanced age and based on the stuff she wrote and preached about she should be one of the main people out there campaigning for Barack. This woman might have a serious problem with black males that none of us were aware of or really paid attention to until now.
It is disgraceful to see a woman who could have gone out (when she eventually passes away)on a high note by having read her babbling garbage at the inaguration of the nations first black president looking like that on this video. The only thing missing after the Aunt Jemimah rag is her calling her master here Miss Hillary in front of this octogenarian crowd. I could not help but notice how old the crowd was, especially the only black male present in it. It is just shameful Hillary stooped to using this woman like that. It is even more shameful that she went along with it.
If she did check in with Oprah or ol'Gayle first and they said yes then they need their asses whupped for not offering this woman more money than Hillary did not to do this. Barack supporter or not Oprah you need to be shame of yourself for allowing this senile woman to do this. She does not have much longer to go before it is too late to admit this was a mistake.
April 30, 2008 5:26 PM
Here she goes again... using blacks to further her agenda.
She will never win because she is too evil.
May 1, 2008 8:30 AM
Brucito, first my name is LaMont (1914inches). I don’t know who 1915moreinches is, although I do respect his/her view on this issue as I respect yours. I can see that you are a very intelligent and articulate person by your last post. That’s why I can not understand why you insist on using such foul language and calling people names. That is kind of childish don’t you think? Tell me Brucito, why are you so angry at everything? Has the “MAN” done you wrong?
I see that you pointed out Barack is an educated Black man that has stayed out the penal system and is successful. Should we praise him for that? No. That’s what he is supposed to do. What does him having married a Black women and starting a family have to do with anything? Would you not be as supporting of Barak if he had married a white women? Or how about maybe if he had married no women and were gay? Mmmmmmmmmm. Now I see the prejudice that Black people would come out then! But my point is, neither one of those things would take away from what Barak is, a very nice young man with potential.
You seem to think that a Black college educated, married man with no jail record is automatically entitled the support of the black community. I don’t think so. This is 2008. You must earn your vote from us just like everyone else before you! You also make the argument that only “old” black folk are in support of Hillary due to some type of slave mentality. I challenge you to find me one Black person alive that was anyone s slave. I am a young(26) Black , college educated, liberal man. I am not a Barack supporter, and there are plenty of people just like me. The only reason you don’t hear about us is because the media and Barack’s Camp wants us not to exist. I am also NOT a “Uncle Tom” a “Safe-Hating Negro” or a “Wanna Be”. I am a member of a historically African American Fraternity, live in a black community, and work for a black owned company. My family, friends and co-workers are all Barack supporters. And I fully respect them and enjoy our debates. They all respect me as well.
I think the biggest issue Blacks may have with Hillary is that her polices and views are too much similar to Obama. There for Blacks because of our need to elect one of our own to the White House are upset that Hillary because of her race, better experience, and status by rob us of our chance. I get it, I really do. I just employ everyone to keep a open mind and respect the views of everyone. Its as simple as that. I would also like to remind you, that if Hillary don’t not get the nomination. African Americans will have to embrace Hills and her supporters ( much of whom unlike me have already commented on voting for McCain or sitting on their hands all together). We must all come together for the big picture, which is not electing a Black man, but rather bring change to the Washington regardless of the man or woman’s race.
Thank you

In this country Maya Angelou can endorse who ever she wants, and, while I don't know who she is or really care, I wonder if the battling camps would have a different point of view if she supported Obama or McCain?
1914inches, you should heed your own advice, after reading your comments, you come off as condescending as your beloved Hillary, try sticking with the facts of what it is she stands for and leave the dirty, perosnal attacks to her, she is quite adept at it.
And, in a democracy, we can pick who to vote for, and, as for coming togather, no way that's going to happen, the party has been too fractured, and, neither Obama nor Clinton can heal it at this late date, its party time for the GOP.
May 1, 2008 9:38 AM
The facts are all i talk about James, i dont see anywhere in my post where i was condescending? What we need to stop doing is viewing Barack and Hillary as enemies. They are not. We are both on the same side you know. I agree with you about it being party time for the GOP. Thats why we should pick the person who is most able to beat them. I am sorry but all polls not point to Hills. Do you think it feels good supporting Hillary. No it does not. I wish it did. I wish i could go to big rallies and fell and inspirational. Then we can all hold hands and skip down Pennsylvania Ave. But sometimes doing things that only feel good to you are not right the right thing to do. I am sure if every one could have unprotected sex without any risk for disease, everyday would be a big sex orgy! Cause it feels go. But you keep on doing what feels good in this election. Just hope you don’t wake up with Political Gonorrhea!
May 1, 2008 9:54 AM
"I think the biggest issue Blacks may have with Hillary is that her polices and views are too much similar to Obama."
I disagree. I think the biggest issue many Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asians, etc have Hillary has nothing to do with her policies or gender or race but everything to do with her character and tactics.
Let's get a few things straight.
People whether black or white or brown are entitled to support whomever they want and they should not be called names and disrespected for doing so, but it would be inaccurate and dishonest to say that blacks are not supporting Hillary because her polices are so much simliar to Senator Barack Obama's or because Obama is black and blacks are going to support him just because of his race regardless of his record or his stances on the issues and experience (and YES BARACK OBAMA HAS MUCH EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE, in fact he has more legislative experience than Hillary Clinton does) and that they would just like to see one of their own in the White House. That couldn't be anything further from the truth and it totally misses the point.
As I've said before, the reasons many people passionately dislike Hillary often has less to do with her gender or race or policies and more to do with her character and tactics. It is her behavior that turns so many people off. It is her behavior, character, tactics, politics and principles. Her do and say anything to win at all cost kind of politics doesn't sit well with a lot of people. That is the real reason why people don't like Hillary and don't support her and often times when a Hillary supporter is presented with the truth they throw a temper tantrum like a little child and ignore the facts.
When Hillary fanatics attack Barack with a seething hatred and without any valid reasonable reasons that never gets reasonably articulated, it DOES seem racist. People who hate Hillary have a loooooooooong list of valid reasons why, none of them relating to her gender, race, or polices of why they dislike her and do not support her. You don't have to support Obama because he's a successful and honorable black man. You're not obligated to do that. But don't inaccurately say people are only supporting Barack because of his skin color. Because that is blatantly false and racist to say.
May 1, 2008 10:07 AM
Ms Dawn i agree with most of your post and thank you for joining the conversation without name calling or being disrespectful. However, people are allowed to attack and dislike anyone based on a whole host of things. I dislike alot of white people, does not mean i am racist. I just plain ol dont like them, just like i just dont dont some black folk. Its that simple. Get over the race thing.
Have a good day!
May 1, 2008 10:15 AM
1914...Seems like you're the only person trippin over race. If it doesn't matter can we see ONE post that deals with something other than race??
Smootchies!
May 1, 2008 10:26 AM
1915- this whole post is only here because of Maya's race. Once we as a whole stop bringing it up. We can stop talking about.
Muah!
May 1, 2008 10:56 AM
For me its Hillary's lack of character and sleazy way of trying to win is a reason I can't stomach her. I have always admired the fact that she is a strong smart woman, but, her win no matter how you sully your opponent's reputation and name and make sure that the party will lose out of your anger and bitterness that you were not the choice of millions, and then that nasty little racial aspect she and her supporters spew is too much.
No longer willing to vote for the lesser of two evils.
May 1, 2008 11:34 AM
Lamont your being only 26 says a lot about the views that you have. To get into a debate with you about why I feel this woman and others who preached about black men and black family values during the 60's,70's,80's and 90's should now put up or shut up would amount to child abuse.
I also bet you have not buried one friend due to AIDS nor remember the days when if you went to visit someone at the hospital you had to go down the hallway and tell the nurse the bed linens were soiled and needed to be changed. How about having two friends whose funerals are on the same day and 70 miles apart in two different states. No junior, (or young princess) you don't, due you?
You also don't know of several who are still incarcerated due to mistakes made from their drug addictions either, do you? Look back at your post about SEVERAL of the things you had the nerve to comment about in regards to Barack's success. You are only 26 and college educated amd it shows.
Yes Lamont, I am on the bitter side. I am bitter at the fact that the blacks who went around preaching about other blacks and their non-progress in education, drug addiction, family values and so forth can not now see where one has come along and is worthy of much more of the recognition than they are offering. As far as I am concerned he is the poster boy that many of their nothing-else-but-about-race bookwriting asses could have had come along. And right there is where the problem lies for many of them.
I have said before and I am saying once again (for the finale time because even I am getting sick of writing about this obviously senile (and I just discovered) opportunistic old woman) they were only in it for themselves. Their book sales were their actual bottom line. The one that listened and found success in their preachings (Barack) has to be destroyed at all costs regardless of how suttle it is being done.
Don't think for one minute that many of those black male and female self appointed popes (I'm sorry I meant to say politicians) are not going to feel threaten by his election by younger ones like your........who are going to start taking notice of just how long they have been in office.
I am going to go out with this as far as you go. It took me a minute to figure out why you would put a name like 1914inches on your post. Those nbrs add up to 15 inches. And you had the nerve to talk about unprotected sex and other things along that line shows...........Goodbye Lamont
May 1, 2008 11:37 AM
This post is not based on race. You acknowledged Ms. Angelous's relevance as a great American Poet. If anything, the article is reporting the endorsement of Hillary by a great literary figure. Read the article and try again.
Toodles!
May 1, 2008 12:24 PM
brucito, thank you for your post. However, i will have to stop trying to have any type of civilized conversation with you due to your continued ignorance. Now that you have disclosed that you are older then me, its makes you "look" even more stupid for continuing to throw insults(little princess) at a young man. Why don’t you be an adult and set an example.
GET OFF IT. The incarceration rate of blacks has nothing to do with race. Its ones own CHOICE to act in unlawful manners in which one ends up behind bars. I wish you older folks would stop making excuses and blaming the white man. PLEASE.
You are right about a few things. I have not had ANY of my friends past away of AIDS, but i have more then i can count on one have that are living with HIV. Like i said, we are still from the same community. Furthermore, my post name (1914inches) has NOTHing to do with sex, but clearly that’s where you mines goes to when you see it( wonder why). Does it excite you? For the sake of you and Ms Mavis, I hope we do get Black President quick so your old bitter butts can die happy.
Now……… you are Dismissed
