U.S. troops in Iraq support Obama, Clinton
Staff Reporter | Posted April 8, 2008 10:52 AM
One after another, soldier after soldier went on the air on national television and expressed support for the candidates who promised to end the war in Iraq.
The "striking" development comes at a time when violence is on the rise in Baghdad and Basra, and the top U.S. commander in Iraq, Gen. David Petraeus, is set to testify on Tuesday before the next president of the United States.
Pfc Jeremy Slate said he supported Barack Obama for president. When asked why, he responded: "I think he has our better interests in mind." He wants to pull out of Iraq, said Raddatz. "That would be nice. I'd like to be home," he replied.
"Probably Hillary," said Staff Sgt. Miranda Glover. "Because I think that her husband did a good job as president," she explained.
"Obama," said Spc Imus Loto. "It'll be something different," he said. He wants to pull out of Iraq, Raddatz reminded him. "He can pull me out too," said Loto.
Only one person interviewed for the story identified as a McCain supporter, and even that seemed to be based more on party affiliation than deep support for the candidate. Sr. Airman Jedidiah Bryan said, "Republicans paid my paycheck this far. Might as well keep it going."
Raddatz reported that U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan seem to be following the U.S. election closely.
