Why I Support Hillary Clinton...Still
Maya Angelou | Posted April 28, 2008 10:15 AM
It may be easy to view Hillary Clinton through the narrow lens of those who would write her off or grind her down. She has endured great scrutiny, but still she dares greatly.
Dr. Maya Angelou is a poet, educator, historian, best-selling author, actress, playwright, civil-rights activist, producer and director.
I am writing to tell you about my friend, Hillary Clinton, and why I am standing with her in her campaign for the presidency. I know the kind of president Hillary Clinton will be because I know the person she is.
I am inspired by her courage and her honesty. She is a reliable and trustworthy person. She is someone I not only admire but one for whom I have profound affection.
Hillary does not waver in standing up for those who need a champion. She has always been a passionate protector of families. As a child, she was taught that all God's children are equal, and as a mother, she understood that her child wasn't safe unless all children were safe. As I wrote about Hillary recently in a praise song: "She is the prayer of every woman, and every man who longs for fair play, healthy families, good schools and a balanced economy."
It may be easy to view Hillary Clinton through the narrow lens of those who would write her off or grind her down. Hillary sees us as we are, black and brown and white and yellow and pink and relishes our differences knowing that fundamentally we are all more alike than we are unalike. She is able to look through complexion and see community.
She has endured great scrutiny, and still she dares greatly. Hillary Clinton will not give up on you, and all she asks is that you do not give up on her. She is a long-distance runner. I am honored to say I am with her for the long run.
I am supporting Hillary Clinton because I know that she will make the most positive difference in people's lives and she will help our country become what it can be. Whether you are her supporter, leaning towards her, undecided, or supporting someone else, I believe Hillary Clinton will represent you - she will be a president for all Americans. It is no small thing that along the way we will make history together.
I know she will make us proud.

And, you left out, she and her husband have no issue putting race baiting into the mix, so, your opinion is one of those elderly people who needs to keep out of current issues as you really don't see that the country is over Bush and Hill/Billy and want a change, not the same old vile, nasty racist campaign win at any cost candidate. But, then again, I don't even know why you are "famous."
She might make you "proud" but thank God she will not ever be elected to the office, even if she manages to steal the nomination.
April 28, 2008 10:16 AM
Rupert: Don't be an jerk. Hillary may represent the status quo and her campaigning style does leave lot of be desired, but its EQUALLY devisive to make personal attacks against DR. Angelou for simply supporting who she (and several million americans) confidently support.
I, myself, am an avid Obama supporter, but I have nothing personal against Hillary either--she just isn't the person I want to see in the oval office.
We have so many challenges ahead as a country that I think this presidential race has distracted us from. Rather Hillary or Barack (bor BOTH) is in office this fall, it will take us being unified to help them implement ANY change.
Let's start on that road to unity.
April 28, 2008 10:31 AM
Maya Angelou, give me a freaking break!
It's stupid of you to write use trustworthy and honest in the same sentence when describing Hillary Clinton.
It's almost like you are aging disgracefully with senility being a quick turn around the corner.
Your support of Hillary is neither required nor desired.
It's easy to view Hillary through the lens she has provided for us. Contrary to what many of her supporters claim, we are able to think for ourselves without old lapdogs like you presenting us with your personal views.
Thanks, but no thanks.
April 28, 2008 11:05 AM
Dear Maga Angelou
You are one of my inspirations. You are a everlasting example of what black genius in this country is. And I respect your decision to support Hillary Clinton. I too think that she is a remarkable woman who is incredibly intelligent and has been a lifelong public servant. But I do not feel that she is whats best for the country. Nor do I feel that she represents the monumental change that is necessary to be a catalyst to bring about a revolution in this country. Many of the wonderful things you said about Hillary Clinton can also be said about Barack Obama.
"It may be easy to view Hillary Clinton through the narrow lens of those who would write her off or grind her down. Hillary sees us as we are, black and brown and white and yellow and pink and relishes our differences knowing that fundamentally we are all more alike than we are unalike. She is able to look through complexion and see community. She has endured great scrutiny, and still she dares greatly."
Those same things can be said about Barack Obama. Dr. Angelou I can holy hope that you support Barack Obama when the time comes, Because he is the inevitable democratic presidential candidate!
April 28, 2008 11:19 AM
I have to say I agree wholeheartedly with Xx. Dr. Angelou for you to even suggest that Hillary Clinton is honest and trustworthy is beyond comprehension. It boggles the mind as to how someone of your stature and eloquence would be caught up in such a divisive woman. Any person with half a brain (that is actually functioning properly) and a double-digit IQ would tell you that you are so far off the mark until you wouldn't be able to find it if you tried. And I say this love and in a spirit of humility and I hope you don't take my comments as an insult.
But Mrs. Angelou you are wrong about Hillary Clinton. You are very wrong about her and anyone that has been paying close attention to this campaign like I have would tell you that. I would believe your comments about Hillary Clinton, Dr. Angelou (because I hold you in such high regard and I do believe that you are a very wise woman, but your support of Hillary Clinton has only confirmed my belief that even wise people can make wrong decisions) if I had not seen with thy own eyes and heard with thy own ears just how appalling of a type of person Hillary Clinton is.
She will lie about anything that serves her purpose of the moment. She will lie, cheat, and steal. She is vindictive, deceitful, deceptive, manipulative, dishonest, untrustworthy, and insensitive. There is nothing off limits with her. She will say and do anything to win. There is no integrity or truth about her. She will use whatever she can to her own advantage against her opponents particularly her fellow Democratic colleague Sen. Barack Obama no matter how vile or trivial, and untruthful it may be. As long as she can hurt him and make him lose she will be satisfied with whatever the outcome is.
She will stoop to anything to win this race. She is corrupt and so is her husband. She has been bought by the special interest and lobbyist in Washington. In fact, she willful admits to taking their money and doesn't find anything whatsoever wrong with it. She doesn't think lobbyist and special interest in Washington are a problem. She continues to play the system and Washington games as they have always been played. She is as Ralph Nader said, the "corporate Democrat". And you know it is truly sad that a person like you (Mrs. Angelou) with all of your wisdom and knowledge can't see through her lies of deception.
I'm not against Hillary because she is female. I have nothing against a woman being president of the United States. In fact, I would love to have a woman president someday but not this woman. The reasons most people passionately dislike Hillary, often have less to do with her gender and more to do with her character. She has proven time after time again that she lacks the good character that is necessary in order to lead this country in a more positive and progressive direction. If the pass 7 seven years of George W. Bush should have taught us anything is that we need a president of character and leader of good judgment and someone who is honest and trustworthy. Hillary Clinton doesn't possess any of those characteristics. I'm just sad to see that you can't see that Dr. Angelou.
April 28, 2008 11:33 AM
Well, Tandy, when the Clintons started race baiting for votes, they and thier surrogates left the door open for them to be called out for what they are, some are racist, Ferrerro, Rendell, and, in this case an elderly lady who must be senile and totally out of touch with current affairs or like the other blacks who love dem some Clinton's, self hating and need a great white person to save them like the BET Johnson, Nutter and Tubbs of Ohio, since, if someone pulls the games they have to get votes, playing the race card, it shows, the just Kayne West said, they don't like them no blacks. Nothing "jerky" about the truth and keeping it real, and, if I'm left to chose between a white perosn, it will be McCain, at least he keeps it real with his disdain for blacks.
April 28, 2008 12:05 PM
Hillary Clinton is neither honest nor trustworthy. It is tragic to see someone of Ms. Angelou's stature publicly support someone of proven low morals and integrity.

Ms Angelou:
The cage bird sings because it is devoid of freedom. Why do you feel that you have to sing Ms. Clinton praises, you are a poet and author who should perhaps realize, that simply because you are such, does not mean that you opinion matters to anyone but you and those you support.
Ms Hansberry in her award winning play" A Raisin in the Sun “puts on the lips of Mama in reference to the suffering of her son Walter Lee Younger" have you prayed for him today."
Ms Angelo have you prayed for your brother today who has endured and overcome the hate filled racist caging locking attacks of the woman whom you support.
April 28, 2008 1:04 PM
Maya Angelou is to be commended for her standing behind her words, free of personal bias. Maya Angelou walks the talk.
Maya Angelou is a woman who would be warmly welcomed upon our tribal lands, not because we agree with her rather because she speaks her mind with sincerity; she is a woman of courage and honesty.
Maya Angelou is a great woman and a great American.

I know why the old caged negro bird sings. It's sings because it's old & tired, like that pathetic wrining above justifying Hillary.
Pathetic that a woman like Angelou can't discern and delineate with substance. Here we have and old Negro figure head basically saying, "Do as I do, don't ask me to provide substance, I just like her".
Why Can't Angelous go deeper than this simple simon 3rd grade caliber discourse? Isn't that hilarious? No depth, nothing that a 8 year old could not muster, it's really embarassing in that conext, is it not?
Whaddaya think she'd say to her girl Oprah? And why doesn't Oprah listen to her old ass?
Go back in that Cage you old Bird!
April 28, 2008 2:01 PM
Maya Angelou is still alive?
It is odd she is unable to articulate with depth on this point of hers.
I too would expect a more intricate and nuanced argument as opposed her elementary speech here written.
Any chance this is a spoof? I know she supports Hillary but the language seem quite juvenile.
April 28, 2008 2:21 PM
When you were listing her credentials you forgot ex-madame, which she was.
It is very obvious that part has not left her either. She has no doubt sold to the highest bidder. You can take them out of the profession, but you can't..............ya'll know the rest.
April 28, 2008 3:27 PM
Pray for her, she still thinks that she is a 1850's slave and that Missy Hillary will save her and let her into the big house. Had Hillary not went straight up KKK in this race to get the Latino and poor white vote, I would have cut her some slack, not now not ever.
April 28, 2008 5:16 PM
People, my people I too am a avid Barack Obama supporter and in being so I agree that people who don't support Barack have right to agree to disagree with me on this. There really is no need for the ugly discourse and mean spiritedness that many of you are stooping to in your comments. As Obama supporters who support what he is trying to do let's conduct ourselves with the respect and civility that he has displayed in his campaign. To do otherwise in my opinion go against the whole principle of what his campaign is about. The comments that Brucito made were totally uncalled for and have no place in an intelligent discussion of who one should support.Shame on you Brucito for such a gutter comment.

Hillary honest? You mean the same person said she was ducking bullets in Bosnia and who signed off on Democratic Party rules agreement to not participate in the Michigan or Florida primaries if they held early elections. That honest Hillary?
April 28, 2008 6:14 PM
Anthony my brother that was not a gutter comment. It is a fact. She also has an "honary degree".
She speaks and writes well and can give a very dignified appearance but I stand by my assesment of her. Case closed. Discussion over.
April 28, 2008 7:54 PM
Once again my brother Brucito we can agree to disagree. How do her past as a Madame have any relevancy to the present and her support of Hillary Clinton? Personal attacks on a person's past or character is the type of gutter politics that Barack isn't about so therefore I stand by what I originally said, " shame on you" for such a gutter comment and now the case can be closed, end of argument, discussion over.
April 28, 2008 8:38 PM
Well, a person who is in the spotlight as a so called celebrity has opened the door to all their past being mentioned and its not as if her past is a secret. She is an avid supporter of Clinton and all she stands for, as is her right to like race baiting politicians, so, she should be called out on it, as well as whatever she did in her past to show the parallels to the Clinton's who both have no moral fiber. Its a shame that these black people who feel as though the tag teaming, race baiting Clinton's are the second coming of Lincoln just can't keep their traps shut. Just who does woman have any ability to sway a vote from the HRC voters by and large are white women, Latinos and the poor in those groups, and sadly for Maya they have no clue as to whom you even are or care why you still support her, as do millions of other Americans of all colors, including blacks.
April 28, 2008 10:17 PM
Break out the Alzimers' meds! She makes no sense. Its not even pretty language. Where is our poet to challenge us to try a new thing? I'm glad we can see through this baseless plug for continuing the status quo. The Bush/Clinton/Bush Dynesty is over! Revolution now! Obama is just the beginning of a truly new government for the people, by the people. I say that not putting my trust in Obama, but hoping that we've had enough of court-side democracy. Its time we all have a say....even our beloved alzimers patients.
April 28, 2008 10:47 PM
Dr. Maya Angelou,
Maybe she has made you proud - but not me and a lot of other Black Americans. I just don't get you. Obama has alreay made me proud. And if they steal this away from him - I would never, never, never vote for Hillary Clinton. Now how many Black American do you think feel the same way??
Between Rev. Wright and Hillary we are going to fight through this and if he doesn't make it, I'm still very proud of him. I don't know how you can say the same about Hillary.
Confused in PA.

It is heartening to see so many who have turned the page on BushClintonClintonBushBush...
I listen to Jennifer Holliday's rendition of "Change is gonna come" (and I believe written by Maurice White) as often as I can these days.
Change happens from the grassroots. Hold on, hold strong my young brothers and sisters. Bright lights will grow dim, but the youth will finish the work.
April 29, 2008 11:33 AM
I am so surprised and saddened by these comments. How come Black Obama supporters are so mean spirited to people of their own race? I can’t believe you all would disrespect an elder, now I know your mother taught you better then that. My people, we are not monolithic in our thoughts and we don’t have to agree on every single thing. How dare you marginalize Maya’s great contribution to the fabric of the black community just because she is going against the tide( which I mind you is changing). Obama is not a civil rights leader, nor is he our savior Jesus Christ. He is just a regular politician just like Clinton. Like I said before, if Obama does not win the nomination or the presidency, it wont be because of racism….it will be because of the untactful and tasteless tactics of his Black supporters (like Rev Wright).
April 29, 2008 11:58 AM
You know it's a wonder how we as a people make it these days as spiteful and mean spirited as we are towards one another. I am an Obama supporter and have been since he came to Denver. So even tho I disagree with Ms. Angelou on this topic, there's no way I would stoop to some of the crass comments that have been made in this post. It's just, wrong. Now as far as Clinton goes, in my opinion, in a race between her and Obama I'll choose Obama. But should it come down to her and McCain... There's no way in hell I'm gonna let my dislike for Clinton cause me not to vote for her and set the stage for another 4 years of the Bush Doctrine. You may not like her for whatever reason, but she'll do a lot better than McCain would in office.
April 29, 2008 1:12 PM
Everyone of you have an opinion, and support someone in this race, and is not afraid to voice it. So why is it so bad for Ms.Angelou to voice who she supports. The fact being neither a blackman or a woman will be president.I support both.Let one of them in.
April 29, 2008 1:15 PM
Well, mrs tiny, I have to say you are right, Obama can't win, and, thank God Hillary can't, so, bizness as usual.
Peace.
April 29, 2008 3:29 PM
I just don't see why this piece is here in the first place Keith Boykin knows who his audience are and he knows just how passionate they are about their Candidate. But I guess his job is to put fuel on the fire.
I respect you Miss Angelou, but I couldn't care less why you support this race baiter who is banking on racists to vote for her over Obama, who tries to remind her white racist voters that Obama is black just in case they have forgotten ( and this is not to say all her white supporters are racist).
Your last paragraph insults the intelligence of black folks. Why the hell would you come to this sight and try to tell us what Hillary would do for us? Do you think we lack intelligence and lack the capability to independently and rationally choose who we want to vote for?
You can go ahead and "still" vote for Hillbilly but STOP TRYING TO STEAL OBAMA"S SUPPORTERS!
April 29, 2008 8:31 PM
Karen dear this woman has to earn her keep. AND I MEANT THAT EXACTLY HOW IT IS TYPED. Her friend HILLARY HER BLACK ASS.
This woman obviously (with her "honorary degree holding ass) thinks that since the majority of black gays run to the tv to catch Ms. Patty everytime she's on then they will surely stop dead in their tracks and vote for Hillary since THE MS. ANGELOU is supporting her. This chick needs to stop spiking her Geritol and smell the coffee.
INTELLEGENT, EDUCATED BLACKS SEE A FRESH NEW CHANGE IN BARACK. Well over half of black americans nowadays were born after the civil rights era and see Barack as a well needed change. Her and several others know their "prestige, grace, intelligence and dignity status" is now going to be threatened by a very likeable and electable black male.
Just think what his winning the election would do to their (more or less same as the one before) book sales about race. She is thinking along the lines of the ex-madame that she is. Barack is bad news for their business. THEIR RACIAL REPORTING BUSINESS THAT IS.
April 30, 2008 2:06 AM
...wow, such vicious and appalling comments directed at maya...just because she is for hillary do you honestly think she despises barak or something? i can understand not agreeing with her choice in candidates but the personal attacks? i'm stunned that some of these posters have no respect or manners...i doubt barak would care for supporters like this at all...i'm really curious brucito, do you talk to or about your mother like this? if not...please, FALL BACK...express your opinion, but no need to be like school in summer...! just a suggestion...dang...

Yeahisaidit how does this sound? List the names of her children or the man that she is romantically involved with and I will apologize to them for my comments in a heartbeat.

I will comment again Maya Angelou is a great woman and a great American. She is an excellent role model for all peoples. Maya Angelou is amongst the finest of people. I cannot commend Angelou enough for her long lifetime stuggle to excellence.
Maya Angelou is truly a historic heroine. She has accomplished more during her life than almost any of us will ever accomplish. I love the woman and I find those who degrade her character to be only worthy of my contempt.

MY FELLOW "BITTER", STUPID, WORKING CLASS PEOPLE :-)
If you think like Barack Obama, that WORKING CLASS PEOPLE are just a bunch of "BITTER"!, STUPID, PEASANTS, Cash COWS!, and CANNON FODDER. :-(
You Might Be An Idiot! :-)
If you think Barack Obama with little or no experience would be better than Hillary Clinton with 35 years experience.
You Might Be An Idiot! :-)
If you think that Obama with no experience can fix an economy on the verge of collapse better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) led the greatest economic expansion, and prosperity in American history.
You Might Be An Idiot! :-)
If you think that Obama with no experience fighting for universal health care can get it for you better than Hillary Clinton. Who anticipated this current health care crisis back in 1993, and fought a pitched battle against overwhelming odds to get universal health care for all the American people.
You Might Be An Idiot! :-)
If you think that Obama with no experience can manage, and get us out of two wars better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) went to war only when he was convinced that he absolutely had to. Then completed the mission in record time against a nuclear power. AND DID NOT LOSE THE LIFE OF A SINGLE AMERICAN SOLDIER. NOT ONE!
You Might Be An Idiot! :-)
If you think that Obama with no experience saving the environment is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) left office with the greatest amount of environmental cleanup, and protections in American history.
You Might Be An Idiot! :-)
If you think that Obama with little or no education experience is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) made higher education affordable for every American. And created higher job demand and starting salary’s than they had ever been before or since.
You Might Be An Idiot! :-)
If you think that Obama with no experience will be better than Hillary Clinton who spent 8 years at the right hand of President Bill Clinton. Who is already on record as one of the greatest Presidents in American history.
You Might Be An Idiot! :-)
If you think that you can change the way Washington works with pretty speeches from Obama, rather than with the experience, and political expertise of two master politicians ON YOUR SIDE like Hillary and Bill Clinton..
You Might Be An Idiot! :-)
If you think all those Republicans voting for Obama in the Democratic primaries, and caucuses are doing so because they think he is a stronger Democratic candidate than Hillary Clinton. :-)
Best regards
jacksmith... Working Class :-)
p.s. You Might Be An Idiot! :-)
If you don't know that the huge amounts of money funding the Obama campaign to try and defeat Hillary Clinton is coming in from the insurance, and medical industry, that has been ripping you off, and killing you and your children. And denying you, and your loved ones the life saving medical care you needed. All just so they can make more huge immoral profits for them-selves off of your suffering...
You see, back in 1993 Hillary Clinton had the audacity, and nerve to try and get quality, affordable universal health care for everyone to prevent the suffering and needless deaths of hundreds of thousands of you each year. :-)
Approx. 100,000 of you die each year from medical accidents from a rush to profit by the insurance, and medical industry. Another 120,000 of you die each year from treatable illness that people in other developed countries don’t die from. And I could go on, and on...
OBAMA AIDE: "WORKING-CLASS VOTERS NOT KEY FOR DEMOCRATS" :o
DEBATE! DEBATE!! DEBATE!!!...

This post goes out to jacksmith.
“WE DON'T WANT HILLARY!” and here's why...
Copyrighted 2008
WE DON’T LIKE HILLARY. She doesn’t play fair.
WE DON’T TRUST HILLARY. She doesn’t really care.
All she cares about is winning, to have power over the land
To be CEO of the USA, and have all at her command.
WE DON’T LIKE HILLARY because she is untrue.
She lies & spins & twists the facts to manipulate me & you.
WE DON’T TRUST HILLARY to do what’s honest & what’s right
Because she is self-serving, she even puts Blacks against Whites.
WE DON’T LIKE HILLARY, She’s an arrogant, cold bully
Who put on a soft display of tears, to trick us into giving her victory.
She came on icey, detached, controlled, but then said she “found her voice”.
But the new Hillary is just the old, in a mardi gras mask-- calculated choice.
WE DON’T TRUST HILLARY. She plays dirty politics & mind games.
She attacks, undermines & cheats & then says others are to blame.
WE DON’T LIKE HILLARY. She insults our intelligence.
Making a FOOL of the MEDIA & us all-- From her tactics to questionable experience.
WE DON’T TRUST HILLARY. SO WHAT about “experience”?
If it’s just more “same old guard” status-quo-dirty-pool-“Broken Washington” offense?
WE DON’T LIKE HILLARY. How come she gets to be 2 against 1??
Depending on her husband’s ex-presidency, popularity AND strategy--
“The Clinton Machine” to get things done?
WE DON’T TRUST HILLARY who owes the lobbyists & special interests coming in
She says she cares about our issues, but that’s all over once she wins.
And picture this: Even if she GOT elected, by the likes of me & you--
How will she ever get any bills passed in congress-- If THEY don’t like her-- “too”?
WE DON’T LIKE HILLARY. We need a NEW bar of soap.
To clean up Washington, restore our country’s values & bring unity & hope.
WE DON’T WANT HILLARY!!!!! ...But we’ll see the end of her riddle...
If we elect her president---- we’ll realize, she’s played us all like a fiddle.

Go on now Dawn, that is the best post I have read and spot on, HRC is the worst possible person since Reagan and both Bush's for the job.

Rupert: the race baiting you are referring to was not by the Clinton's but rather the liberal media. Look it up. Furthermore, speaking of race baiting, why hasn't Obama acknowleged that he has gotten the support of 96% of the black vote which is highly impressive. When the Clintons got this vote in '92 and '96 they were the first to make note of it?
Dawn: you say a lot but, I wish you would consider the facts. All politicians seem to fit your description. I think what is at play here is the old tale of something new. Which is good. However, not everything which is new is good. Obama is a smart man and great candidate and will get the nomination. But just put yourself in the shoes of people who knew him. While I don't condon Rev. Wright's recent actions, but how would you feel if you opened up the door to this young man only to be told pray with me in the basement and by the way you can't stand with me when I make the announcment that I am running for president, because you can be a bit harsh in your sermons. And then not be able to explain his relationships with the pastor other than to say, i wasn't there when he gave those sermons? Again I don't condon the Reverend's actions, but Obama had a year to put together an eloquent explanation on who the Reverend is in his life. When the story broke he had two months to put something together before the ABC election. Instead he chose to believe his own rock star hype. In the end he not only hurt himself (not to mention his judgment that he says others don't have) but he damaged a relationship with a man who lead him to God. Go figure...
