American Airlines will charge passengers to check even one bag

American had already joined other airlines that have begun charging passengers $25 to check a second bag, but the move on Wednesday puts the airline ahead of the industry in cutting back costs and passing them onto the consumer.

American was responding to soaring jet fuel costs, which have risen dramatically in the past year as the price of oil has doubled to nearly $130 barrel. Analysts predict that other airlines would follow suit soon and raise their fees as well.

American also announced that it was cutting back on flights and cutting some of its workforce.
