Sharpton plans mass arrests to protest Sean Bell verdict
Staff Reporter | Posted May 4, 2008 12:01 AM
"If you're not going to lock up the guilty in this town, then I guess you're going to have to lock up the innocent," Sharpton said Saturday at the headquarters of his National Action Network. "Since you won't lock up the cops, then lock up those that are fighting for justice," he said.
Sharpton laid out plans for protests to take place citywide on Wednesday, including a pray-in and organized efforts to block traffic throughout New York.
"What some in the press [are] trying to do is bury the story and act like it's over," said Sharpton. "It ain't over because we cannot live with a verdict that says police are justified with no crime, no probable cause, shooting three unarmed innocent men and walking away like our lives don't mean anything."
Twenty-three-year-old Sean Bell and two friends were shot November 25, 2006 by undercover police detectives the night of Bell's bachelor party. Officers said they heard one of the men mention a gun, at which point the detectives fired 50 shots at the vehicle in which the men were sitting. Bell was killed and his two other companions were wounded. The three detectives were acquitted on all charges by a judge on April 25.
Sharpton has promised to "close this city down" but pledged the protests would be peaceful. Police issued a statement that they did not expect any violence.
Sharpton would not reveal all the details for the day of protests, according to WNBC News, but he did announce the locations for the main protests. They are:
- Third Avenue at 125th Street
- Park Avenue at 34th Street
- Third Avenue at 60th Street
- Varick and Houston Streets
- One Police Plaza
- 415 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn
