The black superdelegates: A guide to the 100+ African Americans who may decide the election

Keith Boykin | Posted May 12, 2008 9:25 AM

FOUNDING SPONSOR

But there is another subgroup we don't know as much about -- the black superdelegates. It's almost impossible to find a good list on the Internet of African American superdelegates. So we decided to create our own. It's a work in progress, and it will change rapidly, but we believe this is the most accurate and complete, publicly available list of black superdelegates.

Why is it so hard to find this information?

First, it's difficult to determine exactly who is or is not African American. We based our decisions on publicly available information. Using that approach, we were able to identify 111 black superdelegates.

Next, we had to figure out which superdelegates were supporting whom. That was even more challenging. We searched through multiple databases and sometimes came up with conflicting information. We tried to base our categorizations on information that was available in reliable public sources, such as newspapers and the candidates' own web sites.

Then we had to find contact information for everyone on our list. It was such a daunting task that we are still updating it as we publish this list. Our editorial board made the decision to publish the names, addresses and telephone numbers of all 111 African American superdelegates. In some cases, we made the decision to publish home telephone numbers, but only when those numbers were provided by the superdelegates themselves in a public forum.

We are also in the process of collecting email addresses for the 111 African American superdelegates on our list. We will be updating our list to include that information as we collect it.

Our purpose in publishing this information is not to harass the superdelegates or to violate their rights to privacy. Our purpose is to provide what we consider to be valuable public information to our readers.

We invite you to comment or email us to help us update this list, and we hope you will use this information responsibly and conscientiously.

Thank you very much for this list. Do you also have a list of elected African-American officials that are supporting HRC. I think it would be useful. "Hard Working, Hard working Americans, white Americans" I think they all owe us an explanation as to why they still support HRC after such a racially divisive statement.

Mrs Mavis Gibson
2008-05-12 12:36:46
Well, I for one would not have any faith in any of them to do the right thing, which would be to vote with their constituents if they went for Obama. And, this whole concept of the 'super delegate' needs to be abandoned as it makes the voice of the voter moot and the nepotism and cronyism decides. And, knowing how the Clinton's operate, all they have to do is dangle some cash in front of many of these folks and she will get their support, since almost all of them are only looking out for themseleves.

I have to agree with Mr. Mavis Gibson in some sense. I think White America knows that about us. They know our "hidden" cards. Most of the super delegates are probably "self-serving" just like most of the politicians. I started out wanting to vote for HRC until I got more invovled in the campaign and listening to both candidates. Recently, I have such a dislike for HRC because she's doing what any white person would do, that's an underdog. They'll go to whatever means to destroy the black man. Its time for African Americans to unite for once in this world. We've been so conditioned to think that white is right. HRC is showing you just how she and Bill Clinton has pimped the black community. They know we're a passionate people and will stand behind those who share of passion of fighting for injustice. At first, I felt like Obama did'nt have much of strong campaign, but he's showed me he does. So my vote is for Obama. He's a black man like myself and if he's not ready, he will be. OBAMA 08. One last thought. Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson, and these other "self-serving" individuals are pimping the black community also. They don't represent me. MERZ

What happened to Bishop Arthur Brazier, Apostolic Church of God, 63rd and Dorchester, Chicago, IL. Bishop Brazier's name was on the election ballot, I checked his name as a Superdelegate for Obama, and I would like to know why his name was not included on your roster. The information you have provided is informative and appreciated. Just need a response to my query. Thank you,

The saddest thing I witnessed during this whole campaign was what appeared to be an older, angry and hate filled Carol Simpson as Hilary supporter on Larry king last week. It was such an ugly surreal malfeasance. An attack on all those who disagreed with Hilary. The real sad part is that now this how I will remember Ms. Simpson not as a professional newsperson but as a hate filled person spewing and not talking in the throw of temper tantrum. The only other scene I will always remember sadly is that of that Stephanie Tubbs Jones lady saying that Hilary's "white man comment" was not divisive and racist, why couldn’t she have just maintained some dignity by being quite, God help her.

Dear Valeria: Bishop Arthur Brazier is not a superdelegate. If you voted for him and he won, that would make him an "elected delegate," not a superdelegate. The superdelegates are not elected. They are selected by the Democratic National Committee party rules. I personally oversaw the compilation of this list, and I believe it is the most accurate tally of black superdelegates on the Internet. However it is not perfect. If there are corrections or errors, please let us know and we will research them and update the site accordingly. Thanks, Keith Boykin Editor, The Daily Voice

Hi, You have Bill Jefferson and Bill Jeffers from Louisiana, but there are two more African-American superdelegates from our state: Ray Nagin, mayor of New Orleans Renee Gill Pratt, former La. state house rep and former NOLA city councilwoman

Marc
2008-05-12 18:00:48
I don't see them as doing but what Bill and Hillary tell them, none of these people have the moral fortitude to think for themselves or listen to the people who voted them into office have said. The one thing I would love to hear them reply to is her hateful, racially divisive, desperate, "white voter" remark.

Hi Beth, Thanks for your comment. Ray Nagin is not a superdelegate. and Renee Gill Pratt is already on the list as one of Hillary Clinton's 34 superdelegates. Thanks for your feedback. Keith Boykin Editor

I hope the constituency of those super delegates that are supporting HRC will have the insight to vote them out of office come their re-election. We as african americans vote these individuals into office, let's hold them accountable. My Sen. Robert (Bobby) Scott, VA is intouch as always, and supports Obama! Has Maxine Waters and a few others in the above list switched to Obama? It was reported in the media that she and Rangel were HRC supporters. I had lost all respect for Waters and the others as well. To their constituents, please vote their a-- out of office. Anyone that chooses to run agaist them would have a shoe in! As for that nut case Carol Simpson, something has run her crazy. Indeed, it is very sad to see blacks who obviously don't think much about themselves or the race. Because white america is showing each of us what they think of us! Perhaps, people like Carol Simpson, Stephanie Tubbs Jones and the list goes on, feel they are not included! LOL! They can always find them...can't they?

According to Mark Halperin, Obama just picked up two more superdelegates this morning, including Ray Nagin. Keith, are you sure Mayor Nagin is not a superdelegate?

Keith Boykin
2008-05-13 12:26:03
Dear Beth and harlemboy, Turns out you were right Beth. I apologize for the error. Ray Nagin was not listed as a superdelegate last week, I assume because the lists we consulted had not been updated. He was added as a superdelgate after a state convention on May 3 and endorsed Obama today. Keith Boykin

Thanks for the list! I am in the process of emailing these representatives and requesting a push towards Senator Obama as I type these words. I think it is important to that we end this primary race expediently so that our candidate can focus on the general election race.

Flash! May I remind you, nobody should vote for someone merely because of the color of one's skin or ethnicity. Instead, your vote should be based upon your perception of what the candidate can best do for you; therefore, vote your conscious. In addition, some of our Congressional Members have voted for Hillary, which is "their right," and they "should not" be voted out of office because they don't meet your expectations. This Black American is voting for Obama primarily because he shows me far more than Hillary could ever show me. Besides, with the Almighty's help, he'll do just fine

Hiroko Morita-Goldfine
2008-05-25 19:05:10
True RWBurkett, but, how do you deal with the fact when a candidate like Hillary shills for the 'white vote?" Race is always in the race as it is in daily life in this country and in every election when its a person of color and a white candidate, qualifications go out the window and sin color trumps all in most cases. And, the GOP has it as part of its party plank that people of color are not wanted or to be considered real Americans? Well, the can be when they are used to bash a democrat.

I am a black educated woman who supports Hillary Clinton. I resent anyone who feels I should vote for Obama because he is black. If he is the nominee, I plan to vote for McCain just because I hate racism where ever it rears its ugly head. Just reading the comments on this page are very scary. Obama supporters are just like Hitler, If you don't support him you should be put in a gas chamber and killed. Where did support the one who believes in the same principals as you do go? In all my seventy-three years, I have never heard such bigotry as I read your blogs. Are we not free any more?

After viewing this list, I feel that disclosing "how" a superdelegate will vote appear to be like something George W and his cronies would do. I do not want to intimidate anyone to vote based on color. Come on!! We are an intelligent, innovative race of people, and we are better than this. Use your head and vote appropraitely. All white people are not bad, and for eight years the Clintons were not bad either. Hold firm and vote from being informed, and for the person who can get the job done. This is a huge mess, and I believe either one of the candidates will improve the situation. Not McCain, OK?

Don
2008-05-27 08:48:20
Brenda, Well stated, a vote or an endorsement for McCain is simply settling for four more years of George W politics. The enemy of my enemy is not always my friend. Hopefully, all Americas will look at more than the color of the candidate’s skin and make a logical determination based on the issues and the need for change in this country.

Arlene Hill
2008-05-27 09:25:33
I am a black educated woman and very aware that all white people arn't bad. While I was a supporter for President Clinton I realized that we tend to be a bit naiveté about his presidency. If you ask most black people what Clinton did, the first thing they say is that he balanced the budget. But, none of them know how he did it. If I'm wrong please correct me. The budget was balanced by cutting the needs of the poor (welfare), child care, land grant college federal funds, financial aid. Hillary has mentioned balancing the budget again. What will be eliminated this time? Look I'm not so sure the Clinton years were that great we built more prisons then we did schools. So, I'm going with change. I'm not voting for Obama because he's black, I'm voting for him because he is the best candidate.

Dixon I was kind of mixed up on some of the blogs, but you put them in prospecdtive. 1. you are voting for McCain because you hate RACISM. You definitely are not as educated as you claim. To proclaim that Obama supporters are akin to hitler, notice I spelled his name with small letters, is probably as far right as you can get. Which I suspect you are. A wolf in sheeps clothing. Yes there are many Blacks who will vote for Obama just because he is Black. But how many of you will vote for McCain or Hilliary just because they are White or because she is a woman. And have been doing it for your whole lives. Being educated and being wise are not necessarily (akin). There are EDUCATED FOOLS, and a few FOOLS that are EDUCATED. Check yourself

I agree with Mavis Gibson, this whole idea of appointed vote deciders in the form of super delegates appears to be nothing more than a vote either purchased or owed. Further no one shoud be goaded into supporting one candidate versus another but I would ask that people not vote on the basis of sex or gender instead on which one can best handle the challenges facing this country. HRC has set back 20 years the quest for equality irrespective of gender sought by women. She is divisive on the three counts, race, sex and economic status. Addressing the latter, she identifies with the "hard working, white" person, how many of us can afford to loan him/her self, $12-20? I began on the fence choosing between BHO and HRC. I now stand firmly behind BHO while not ridiculing HRC supporters but just asking that all consider the issues honestly and not the appearance. Lastly, if BHO is racially 50 50, glass half empty or half full, why doesn't at least 50% of the popuation call him "white"?

To Dixon and others who confuse support for Obama with "racism:" Racism is defined as the “idea that one's own race is SUPERIOR and has the right to rule.” (Dictionary.com) Even if Blacks voted Obama simply because of his race, it would be is promote EQUALITY, not because of a belief in racial superiority. Likewise, it was not racist for Rev. Wright to point out racial discrimination and its not sexist for females to vote for HRC to promote gender equality. In contrast, a significant segment of white voters have admitted in exit polls that wouldn't vote for Obama because of his color. That is racism. The misuse of the term racism by HRC supporters has been astounding. Additionally, Dixon’s Hitler comparison is ridiculous. It would be a routine and appropriate exercise of the democratic voting right to vote against a super delegate in his/her own election because of past support for an adverse candidate. In contrast, HRC has repeatedly said (in one form or other) that Obama should be rejected he is “not electable” because “hard working people – white people” won’t vote for him. She is basing her candidacy on racism. It would be a shame if the first and perhaps only black candidate with a real shot at the presidency (this election has shown how difficult it is for even a "white-friendly" black presidential candidate) is defeated with the help of self-serving and ‘Uncle Tom’ black super delegates. Our youth deserve a Presidential role model instead of the same old “Huggy Bear” tv/film/music stereotypes. Obama has the qualities to be one of our greatest Presidents ever. Carole Simpson said on Larry King that she supports HRC, not because she is the better candidate, but because of the potential “Mayor Bradley” effect, i.e., that white voters will balk at voting for a black candidate and vote McCain. Larry King summed up her reason as supporting HRC simply because she thinks Obama can’t win. Such a defeatist attitude is a poor reason to support HRC. It would be better that the Democratic party lose doing the right thing than win by fostering racism.

Let me answer those who disagree with me. The reason I am supporting HRC is, I feel she is the best candidate for the office. Unlike some I have read both platforms and listen to all the debates and read as much as I can about both candidates. I feel she will make the best president. I registered as a democrat when I turned twenty one and I have voted in every election. The only republican I ever voted for was Pete Wilson for senator. I felt he was the best candidate for the job. I have friends who have been harass because they chose to vote for HRC. In my sorority, people who want HRC are afraid to say it because they don't want to be harass. I know most black people feel a dream as been answered with Obama, and feel that any black person who does not agree is the enemy. Maybe Mr. Lorenso lives in another world, but in my world it happens. Also I don't believe in name calling to get my point over.

Ms Dixon's views are disturbing & confusing. Her comments express the pre-judgements, sterotypical assumptions, & demeaning and divisive labeling, which are the ROOT of the Racism, which she claims to HATE! (ie, to LABEL all Obama supportors as like 'hitler', is a pre-judgement & an ignorant sterotyping, to say the least!) And her decision to vote for McCain based on offensive & ignorant assumptions re Obama's Supportors, is counter-productive to the evolvement of our ability to embrace differences, our goals of racial equality, and to best interests of our Hearts, our Party & Nation!...as well as, it going against her own belief statement, that we should vote for the Candidate which shares our principals/values...(ie, if Ms Dixon is a HRC supporter, it is likely that she shares most of the principals & goals of the Democratic Party, and doesn't want our nation & world to SUFFER four more yrs of Bush's War and his dysfunctional social, environment, health-care, & economic Agendas, via McCain.) I hope Ms Dixon & all Americans will embrace Obama's wise suggestion and VOTE YOUR HOPES, (for self, community, nation, & world,) and NOT YOUR FEARS!..nor via HATREDS, PREJUDICES, PAST Woundings/injustices, Ego's Sterotyping, & NEGATIVE and untrue ASSUMPTIONS.

Dixon displays exceptional intelligence, "The only republican I ever voted for was Pete Wilson for senator. I felt he was the best candidate for the job." Yours is the best approach. Like you, I cross party lines to vote for a person whom I believe will perform the best job. Dixon, I am watching for your articles and am carefully reading your articles. You write with good common sense and write with quality. You are quite right about being labeled a racist if you do not support Obama. Here and elsewhere, I have been subjected to a lot of abhorrent vulgarity and blatant racism simply because I support Clinton although I will vote for McCain if Obama takes the nomination. Rather fortunate these people spreading discontent are in small numbers. Mainstream Americans are not like these political fanatics. I admire your willingness to stand your ground and your not allowing others to "frighten" you away; you display significant personal strength. You keep on writing, keep on expressing your opinions, keep on standing your ground, keep on being polite yet firm but fair. Doing so earns you great respect and benefits all readers. I'd like to point out to Dixon that I know quite a few black people who hate being black too. They use the same language when talking about their race as racist whites do. Her statement that she will vote for McCain pegs her as one of those who are black but hate other blacks (i.e. hate themselevs for being black). McCains policies are nowhere near HRC's or Obama's so voting for McCain if HRC does not get the nod is a vote for racism not against. You're obviously hell bent on voting for a white person no matter that the 2 you chose have diametrically opposite policies. H If you're educated you should know it's "principles" not "principals". Look it up in the dictionary. Don't forget to look up "hypocrite" too. Educated? Yeah, right!

I find it hard to believe that anyone old or educated enough to have some knowledge of the civil rights movement, could fail to see Obama as not only as the natural progression of Dr. King's dream, but the only opportunity for the nation to finally have a truly fair and democratic government for everyone.

To balance what dixon said about hilary vs Barack, I also will not vote or vote for McCain if the hilbilly and bill show goes on. Black folk were certainly taken in by the Clintons who have shown that they will do anything to get what they want, including dividing a nation more. If you look at Clinton supporters they are their friends, cronies and uneducated whites. Who are these uneducated whites, those that hate black people, racist and hitlerlike. I'm not telling you who to vote for, but who I am going to vote for and why. The Clinton years also set us back because like everybody else they balanced the budget on the backs of POOR PEOPLE (Black and White), but the Willie Lynch syndrome continues to show itself among most poor people. Well I'm glad that God is in charge and has already decided who will be the next President.

I was originally for HRC but after researching Obama, I switched and it was not by duress. Plus, I am disgusted by the politics played by The Clintons. Ms. Dixon, you do have a right to choose the candidate of your choice but why defect to McCain if HRC doesn't obtain the nomination? Calling Obama supporters "Hitlers" is a little far-fetched. Do you prefer older candidates? Think about the best president in my generation: J.F. Kennedy. If the Kennedy Family supports Obama, isn't that saying something to you?

I've been reading some of the commentary regarding this campaign and I have a few suggestions that hopefully will change the focus of the discussion. 1. More attention needs to be put on the media with regard to their "reporting" on the campaign. To often, they put definitions and "twists" on the information that cause confusion and division. Think back to when they referred to Americans as "refugees" in their own country after the Katrina hurricane. Was that because of the "resemblance" of the people they chose to show on the news to others who they refer to as refugees? Surely race had nothing to do with that...or did it? We need to hold them accountable. 2. If the "super delegates" do their job, they should be representing their consituents vote. We also should not let Republicans off the hook. Why should we except their "smug" acknowledgement of not being inclusive. There was a time when Blacks were Republican...some still are as they should be to provide balance. Talk about who's really racist. 3. We might want to get some idea of who the candidates will surround themselves with. The Office of the Presidency is not run by one person. The last 8 years have demonstrated that. Whoever it is will need the support..and cooperation of us all in order to change/shape the future. 4. Speaking of the future, history is being made, so what messages are we sending to the next generation that would make them want to participate in this process? Do we really want to continue to have race/gender be a factor in who we choose as a leader? Lastly, for those of you who claim to be "educated", I have a question for you. When will we ever get past the idea of "race"? If you do your research/history you will find out that it is a term that was and is still being used by those who believe it matters and can be, and is used to manipulate people. I believe one of the goals MLK and others like him hoped to achieve was that one day it wouldn't matter. At some point we have to begin to change the dialogue/conversation in such a way that values and encourages us collaborate and take advantage of the gifts we all have to offer to make this country better. Opportunity is knocking, I just hope we have the courage to answer the door.

Anyone who supports HRC or Obama and would even consider voting Republican if their candidate does not get the nod has MISSED THE BOAT!

How about putting the Picture with the delegates Bio. So we would know who was for Obama.
