Video shows Philly Police beating 3 suspects
Staff Reporter | Posted May 7, 2008 5:28 AM

Police in Philadelphia are facing questions about abuse and misconduct after the violent arrest of three suspects Monday night that was caught on camera.
Philadelphia's Fox 29 television news cameras caught the confrontation from a helicopter Monday evening after police apprehended three men who had allegedly fled a shooting.
The video shows the police following the suspects' vehicle, which was later blocked in, forcing the car to slow down and stop. More than a dozen officers then surrounded the car, pulled out the suspects, dragged them to the ground and began beating them, according to the video.
Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey admitted that the video did not look good, according to Fox 29. "We do not resort to the kind of behavior that you saw on that tape. We are not going to rush to judgment," Ramsey said.
But Mayor Michael Nutter took a different approach. "You have to take this in the context of the environment of what were operating," he told the news media. A police officer, Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski, was recently murdered in the city.
Two of the mothers of the men pulled from the car also complained about their treatment. "It makes no sense," said Leomia Dyches, one of the mothers. Nobody deserves to be beaten like that. They'll throw you in jail for treating a pit bull like that," she told the news.
Her son, Dwayne Dyches, was taken to Temple University hospital and "had a huge lump" on his forehead and was "semiconscious," according to his attorney.
Wain Bennett, an attorney in Philadelphia, described the video as "quite disturbing." In a blog entry posted on The Daily Voice, Bennett writes: "Once again some of our boys in blue acted like the gangsters that they are supposed to be protecting us from."
The three suspects are still in police custody facing charges of aggravated assault. The shooter is still at large, according to Fox 29. The police officers involved will reportedly be removed from duty on the street.

Let's see now. A shooting takes place. Three men flee in a car. A police car with red lights and a siren blasting gets behind them clearly indicating they want the car to pull over. The vehicle containg the three suspects speeds up. A chase begins. Innocent motorist are now in jeopardy because a possible shooting suspect who may still be armed refuses to obey a traffic law that states you must pull over when order to do so.
All of this on top of the fact that a police officer has recently been killed and his killer is still at large and may still be in the area.
Am I wrong to think these three young men got what they were asking for, laws on the books be damned?

What is wrong with this Nutter guy their mayor, he appears not only Insensitive to needs of those who elected him but is he also totally lacking in moral fiber.
As mayor he takes an oath to uphold the law, so how can he condone any one breaking it or give that appearance by affirming any kind of maladjusted behavior.
Sometimes it is best just remain silent and err on the side of caution. The ends I was taught do not justify the means

Why do any investigation, they will be cleared, and, the mind of those doing the so called investigation have already cleared them in their minds. And, its odd they can give beat downs, and, yet can't stop crime, amazing how inept the police are in this country and corrupt Philly is with its crooked mayors who condone it.

If my colleague would be killed a few days ago I would be on edge too.
Here is the video, check out:

It does not matter if they were running from the law or not, or if a million police were murdered two minutes prior. Those men's rights as citizens were violated! I can't believe people would actually justify police brutality, no matter WHAT the circumstance! Wow, people.

I am a citizen of Philly, born and raised here for thirty two years. I also lived in the Hunting Park area about ten years ago. The behavior that everyone can see exhibited on the news video is in no shape or form out of the ordinary. Poor citizens of all colors (but overwhelmingly Black & Brown) who live in the "not so well off" areas have thier human/citizen rights trampled on every day. It is important that Americans realize this, because you always have a cadre of racist idiots like "Brucito" who feel the need to justify the use of excessive force and police brutality as a way of maintaing order; until the police violate thier rights. Then they cry like a woman in childbirth!

The law of the land has to be followed but, give me a break, since when is it the law to give suspects a beat down? Its a shame that the force lost a member, but, so, what is it now, every black man in town is to blame? Not all black men are the thugs and criminals that just about every police department in this country and the media say we are, most of us are like everyone else, law abiding, hardworking citizens, but, unlike the rest, we have to fear the police when we see them.

A reminder of context for readers. This is from Fox News in Reno, Nevada. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey is being quoted by Fox News.
http://www.foxreno.com/news/16185649/detail.html
---
"Some of our NET team officers -- that's the Narcotics Enforcement Team -- from the 25th District were on a surveillance at 4th and Ansbury," Ramsey said.
Ramsey said the officers were working a on a murder investigation when the suspects suddenly pulled up in their car.
"Four individuals got out and they walked up to a group that was standing on the corner. One of those individuals opened fire and shot three individuals on the corner of 4th and Ansbury while the officers were watching this," Ramsey said.
Police said the gunman ran away and was still on the loose Tuesday afternoon. The three later caught in the car were charged with aggravated assault.
---
How many of you readers are willing to admit you are secretly thinking, "Hooray for the Philadelphia police! Hooray for their beating those murderous street gang criminals!"
A bit more reality context. How many of you are afraid to leave your homes at night? How many of you are afraid to leave your homes at anytime, day or night? How many of you live in fear even when inside your homes?
Those criminals are terrorists. Those criminals are terrorizing our America. Those criminals are having all of us living in fear for our lives.
Fifteen police officers have been removed from the streets because of this incident. This is fifteen less police officers protecting America.
Yes, these types of beatings are unlawful and should not happen. This needs to be stopped.
However, I would not write what those police officers did is wrong. I would write, "Hooray for our side! Those murderous thugs were served frontier justice."
I am angry about our having to constantly live in fear because of criminals terrorizing our country. I am angry about criminals being treated better than law abiding citizens.

The police officers may have ruined a perfectly good, open-and-shut case by beating these suspects. Let justice be exacted in court.
May 7, 2008 6:50 PM
Comes as no suprise Purl Gurl that you would condone and be happy with the ILLEGAL beating of the suspects. The police are to arrest, not beat up people they don't like or who have ticked them off, the courts will mete out the proper punishment since that is why we have courts. As one poster said, this is a land of laws, and, the police have to follow those laws like everyone else. And, just becuse you are happy that the black "thugs" as you put it got beat up, just remember, white, Hispanic, Asian and Native American men and women have also been beat up by the police who abuse the badge.
May 7, 2008 9:13 PM
Mrs. Mavis Gibson gives me a tongue lashing,
"Comes as no suprise Purl Gurl that you would condone and be happy with the ILLEGAL beating of the suspects."
Oh yes, very happy. If there is disappointment on my part, this would be the police did not let loose their police dog to chew on those dirtbags.
I read a mother of one those murderous gangsters complained her boy has a knot on his head. Personally, I would have ripped his head off then gave his mother a knot on her head for raising her boy to be a murderous lunatic.
Mavis, difference here is we all know those cretins are guilty as hell. Just before this deserved beating, they were involved in shooting down three people on a street corner. This is followed by a car chase which, as you know, endangers an entire community. Upon stopping, looks to me those animals refused to exit their car. Cannot really blame the police for a strong reaction.
On scene, I would assume each was armed and each intended to kill me. Yeah, I would effect a swift and violent takedown. What I saw going on is police officers kicking and beating to both force those killers to comply and to protect their fellow officers. The takedown and cuffing event is the most dangerous time for police officers.
Beside, those cops were pissed off and rightfully so.
Those three shot on a street corner, probably a rival gang, probably murderous dope dealers. No compassion on my part, if so.
If those three people shot are innocent people of the neighborhood, this changes everything, yes? If three children were shot down, we would all be screaming for the immediate death of those men involved. We would not be screaming about their receiving a beating, we would be screaming for their immediate execution.
This was a very bad and a very dangerous situation. Those three boys were involved in a triple shooting. Those three are lucky the police did not simply blow their heads off.
All across America, good peoples are fighting to take back their streets, to take back their neighborhoods. People are enraged with street gangs and their killing anyone and everyone, including little children. People are fed up with all this violence on our streets.
Previously I write beatings by the police are unlawful, are wrong and do need to be stopped. I will not argue this point.
Nonetheless, in my heart of hearts, I am simply delighted to watch those criminal animals receive a good beating. This is a secret very few will openly admit, and is a secret almost all enjoy. We want criminals to be punished harshly, even if Wild West style street justice.
Contrasting my harsh attitude, should the police beat an innocent person, or give a beating which is not deserved, then those police are the street gang and should be harshly punished.
We are faced with a moral dilemma. Police are always at risk, police are shot and killed quite frequently, police risk their lives for us. We do hold our police to a higher standard of behavior but often forget they are human just like us, forget they value their lives, and forget they have families, have children, have loved ones.
I would rather have our police sometimes screw up and stay alive, than to pamper criminals and end up dead. I cannot defend what those cops did but can feel regret some of them will suffer for their actions, probably suffer more than they deserve.
Should we harshly handcuff our police, next time a police officer might hesitate before kicking and he or another officer will end up dead. Our police have to make quick decisions. We cannot afford to have our police hesitate to take action for fear of what a community might think.
Street gangs have declared war on our country. This changes the rules of engagement. This is a war more than fighting crime.
Our moral dilemma is where do we draw a line between our police protecting us and our police protecting criminals?

Purl if you put one tenth the energy into trying to organize what is left of your tribe and save your native indian tongue language as you do tell us what is wrong or right with the black community how successful do you think you would be?

Purl if you put one tenth the effort into organizing what is left of your tribe and tried to save your native tongue as you do in trying to tell us what is wrong with the black community as a whole how successful do you think you would be?

Purl Gurl please shut up --- your ignorance is sickening. You are probably an illegal alien passing as an Indian just to get food stamps and free ride.
Have you ever heard of innocent until PROVEN guilty? That's how it's suppose to work here sweety. You were not at the crime scene, so you don't know what happened.
This is how it works in the US -- We don't send our police officers through years of training to turn out to be rogue cops. Many of them are locked up because they crossed that line. Now go spew yor venom and ignorance somewhere else.

Well I live in the Delaware Valley,
I will say this. As a Black Male who grew up in Ft Greene Bklyn. The NYPD was never a friend of the community and the Phila PD isn't either. But these kids are running wild and something needs to be done. Because the murder rate in Philly is BOOMBASTIC! And it needs to be put to a HALT PLAIN AND SIMPLE.
These DAMN kids need to be in school getting an education not getting their hands on a dirty gun shooting, and robbing banks and selling drugs! And for issues like those we are to blame because if their momma beat their ass like mines did ours and it's 10 of us. At least they would be somewhat productive in society. And YES everybody I know we aren’t the only ones with youth like this. But I’m Black so I’ll speak to our situation.
As for the police they were 100%, unequivocally, wrong for that ass whooping they gave them. However I'm not a defender of these kids with rap sheets like a best selling novel. Those officers will be disciplined for that and they should. Commissioner Ramsey doesn’t play shit like that. He will handle that!
But our wish our youth would wise up. Let’s be realistic here. Cops everydays don’t go out looking to beat on minorities. But don't worry these cops will be disciplined and they should!
And ignore Opalocka, from the crock pot nation, or whatever her name is…….LOL

Purl Gurl, does you hatred ever stop? The police gave these guys a beating, and, that's not their job. You claim to be a Mother, I guess if the tribal police, even though you are as you say it half white as if that's something special, gave your kids a beat down, you would pat them on the back at the hospital, or is your glee only for the black men you despise? The police are not given a badge and gun to take out their personal issues and frustration and hatred on the public, anyone with a clue can figure that one out, well, anyone but your sort.
Seek help girl, your hatred is eating you alive as is your obsession with all things black.
