Legendary guitarist Bo Diddley has died. Born Ellas Otha Bates in McComb, Mississippi, Diddley grew up to create and define a unique style and became a "founding father of rock 'n' roll," according to the Associated Press.
Diddley made a name for himself in rock 'n' roll in the 1950s and continued to perform for decades, making a comeback of sorts among young people when he appeared in a 1990 Nike commercial centered around Bo Jackson.
In the commercial, Bo Jackson, an all-around athlete, is seen playing several sports, as various sports figures speak out his abilities. "[Kirk Gibson] Bo knows baseball...[Jim Everett] Bo knows football...[Michael Jordan] Bo knows basketball...[John McEnroe] Bo knows tennis?...[Wayne Gretzky] No...[Muscle Beach bodybuilders] Bo knows weights..." Then, after Jackson is seen attempting to play Diddley's famous square-shaped guitar, Diddley stops the music and speaks into the microphone: "Bo, you don't know Diddley!" he says.
Bo Diddley died of heart failure at his home in Archer, Florida, AP reported. He was 79 years old.
See a video below of Diddley performing "Bo Diddley" on YouTube.
Bo Diddley bought his babe a diamond ring,
If that diamond ring don't shine,
He gonna take it to a private eye,
If that private eye can't see
He'd better not take the ring from me.
Bo Diddley caught a nanny goat,
To make his pretty baby a Sunday coat,
Bo Diddley caught a bear cat,
To make his pretty baby a Sunday hat.
Mojo come to my house, ya black cat bone,
Take my baby away from home,
Ugly ole mojo, where ya bin,
Up your house, and gone again.
Bo Diddley, Bo Diddley have you heard?
My pretty baby said she wasn't for it.
