Over the past two days we have had to look at Barack Obama in a different way. He is a change agent, an electrifying speaker, a visionary and yes he is a politician.
His motto 'Yes We Can" has made us believe again in the promises of America. This week we have had to watch the politician operate. Earlier this week we saw the flap over the Muslim women that were denied seating behind Obama at the Detroit rally, Yesterday we saw him decline public financing for his campaign.
Obama reminds me of the boyfriend that comes bearing roses, flowers and candy. He takes you to the best places and he says all the right things. He gets you to fall in love with him and then you start to see the real person. The reality is the real person is still a good guy, but you start doing more ordinary things. You start staying in more watching movies, cooking at home, you start spending more one on one time, and you really start to get to know each other. You are moving through the different phases of a relationship.
That's where we are with Obama. He can not always be the awe inspiring visionary. He has to be that tough-minded politician to get the job done. Obama has been able to raise more money through individual donors than any other politician. He would have been a fool to close down this money-making machine. The only disappointment is how Obama is positioning this.
On the website he tries to spin it as he is rising above the fray. The fact is he needs as much money as he can raise to fight the Republican smear machine. So this week we have to face the fact that Barack Obama is a politician, and he better be if he wants to win in November.
