Don Imus is under fire again in a new controversy over allegedly racially insensitive remarks.
During an on-air radio discussion on Monday about the arrest and suspension of Dallas Cowboys player Adam Jones, Imus asked, "What color is he?"
When sports announcer Warner Wolf told Imus that Jones is "African-American," Imus replied: "There you go. Now we know."
The question is what did Imus mean when he said "There you go."
Did Imus mean to suggest that it was no surprise that Jones was arrested because Jones is black and black men are often the "usual suspects" for crime?
Or did Imus mean that it was no surprised that Jones was arrested because Jones is black and black men are frequently and disproportionately stereotyped as criminals even when they haven't done anything wrong?
In a transcript of the interview segment, Imus appears to be defending the football player, but it is not possible to determine his tone from the words.
WARNER WOLF: Defensive back Adams "Pacman" Jones, recently signed by the Cowboys, here's a guy suspended all of 2007, following a shooting in a Vegas nightclub.
DON IMUS: Well, stuff happens. You're in a nightclub, for God's sake. What do you think is gonna happen in a nightclub. People are drinking, and doing drugs. There are women there and people have guns. So there, go ahead.
WOLF: Also, he's been arrested six times since being drafted by Tennessee in 2005.
IMUS: What color is he?
WOLF: He's African American.
IMUS: Ha ha, well there you go, now we know.
The problem for Imus is that some critics may not be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt after his last experience. The controversial radio show host was forced off the air last year after referring to the Rutgers University women's basketball team players as "nappy-headed hos."
Eight months later, Imus returned to the radio with an apology and a promise to make things better. After the controversy erupted on Monday, Imus said he had been misunderstood this time. "I meant that he was being picked on because he's black," Imus said in a statement.
WABC and Citadel Broadcasting Corporation said Imus would explain his comments on his Tuesday morning show, according to the Associated Press, which said the two broadcasters were unlikely to discipline the popular radio host.
