Bench-clearing brawl or publicity stunt? Candace Parker caught in middle of WNBA brawl
Staff Reporter | Posted July 23, 2008 8:57 AMLA Sparks star Candace Parker was ejected from a WNBA game last night against the Detroit Shock after a fight broke out with less than 5 seconds left on the clock. The fight took place at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit.
"The skirmish began when Parker and Shock forward Plenette Pierson tangled arms as they headed up the floor following a successful free throw by Sparks guard Marie Ferdinand-Harris, causing both players to tumble to the floor," according to the Los Angeles Times. "Pierson quickly rose to her feet and stood over Parker, who then pulled Pierson to the ground," the Times reported.
Detroit assistant coach Rick Mahorn was also ejected from the game after pushing Sparks' star Lisa Leslie to the ground. "I was trying to protect the whole game, the integrity of the game," Mahorn told the Associated Press. "The WNBA is very special to me ... I would never push a woman. This game, I love this game too much," he said.
Okay, but was it a fixed fight?
That's what Reid Cherner & Tom Weir suggest at USA Today. "We hate to begin the day with a conspiracy theory, but it seems a little too coincidental that the attention-starved WNBA had a rollicking good cat fight last night involving Candace Parker, Lisa Leslie and a whole lot of other members of the LA Sparks and Detroit Shock."
The Los Angeles Sparks went on to win the game, 84-81.
