Mother gives birth to black and white twins
Staff Reporter | Posted July 21, 2008 10:35 AM
A black woman in Germany has given birth to twins. But what makes this story unusual is that one baby was born "black" and the other was born "white."
The twin boys were born in Lichtenberg, Germany to a mixed race couple, according to the British Daily Mail newspaper. But doctors say the case is "one in a million," according to some news reports.
The mother Florence Addo-Gerth is a black Ghanaian and the father Stephan Gerth is a white German. The first born child, Ryan, is described as "light-skinned" with blue eyes and the other, Leo, is described as "black" with brown eyes, according to news accounts.
Meanwhile, at least one science blogger has an explanation for all this. "I think that the easiest way to explain the outcomes are stochasticity of gene expression during development, and, possibly gene-gene interactions between these two parents which allow for deviations outside of the expected range," according to Razib at scienceblogs.com.
