In one of the great tennis matchups of all time, Rafael Nadal defeated Roger Federer on Sunday for the first time to win Wimbledon.
Nadal's victory ended Federer's five-year winning streak at Wimbledon in dramatic form, at the end of a twice delayed five-set, 5 1/2 hour match. Nadal won 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-7 (8), 9-7.
It was hailed as a "changing of the guard" in men's tennis as Nadal became the first man to win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year since Bjorn Borg accomplished that feat in 1980.
The men's finals came a day after Venus Williams defeated her younger sister Serena in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4 to capture her fifth Wimbledon championship.
Although the two sisters later played and won in the women's doubles championship, "it was a very sombre Serena that skulked into the room after her 7-5, 6-4 defeat to sister Venus in the ladies final," the official Wimbledon web site reported.
"The 26-year-old admitted she was happy for her older sibling but was visibly disappointed with her performance on the court," according to Wimbledon.org. "I don't think I played well. I don't think I'm satisfied with the way I played today," Serena told reporters. "I think I just lost rhythm and then I just made a lot of errors. I just couldn't get the balls in. Nothing I was doing was seeming to work."
Despite Serena's setback, the two sisters combined forces to defeat Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur, 6-2, 6-2 to claim the Wimbledon double's crown. "Venus and Serena moved to a 7-0 record in Grand Slam finals, and also recorded their 100th doubles win as a unit," according to Wimbledon.org.
