Poll Shows Racial Divisions on Obama
Staff Reporter | Posted July 16, 2008 9:30 AMOn the surface, Senator Barack Obama offers change and hope for racial reconciliation. But a new poll indicates that Americans are still sharply divided about race, and about Obama's candidacy.
In a New York Times/CBS News poll, released just two days after Obama was greeted enthusiastically at the annual convention of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People on Monday, found a sharp and dramatic racial divide between black and white voters in their perception of Obama.
More than 80 percent of black voters said they had a favorable opinion of Obama while only about 30 percent of white voters said the same, according to the poll. Although Obama leads in nearly all national polls, the new poll suggests that white voters are still not nearly as supportive as blacks.
Blacks and whites also differed sharply over their perceptions of race relations in America. Almost 60 percent of blacks said that race relations are generally bad, compared with 34 percent of whites, the New York Times reported.
The poll also found little change from a previous Times survey on race conducted 8 years ago to mark the millennium. "Few Americans have regular contact with people of other races, and few say their own workplaces or their own neighborhoods are integrated," the Times reported.
In fact, the percentage of blacks reporting that they had encountered a specific instance of discrimination based on their race actually increased from 62 percent in 2000 to 70 percent this year.
Obama does well in the poll among black voters, winning 89 percent, compared to 2 percent for McCain. But Obama is also helped by McCain's inability to close the deal with white voters. Obama trails McCain among white voters by 46 percent to 37 percent, but McCain still does not win the majority of white votes. McCain is scheduled to speak to the NAACP in Cincinnati today.
Despite Obama's success in the campaign, the poll indicates some potential fault lines for the candidate. Even Obama's wife, Michelle, provoked different opinions. She was viewed favorably by 58 percent of black voters but only 24 percent of white voters. One white respondent described her as a "spoiled brat."
Blacks and whites did agree on one thing. By solid majorities, both groups felt that whites had a better chance of getting ahead in today's society. Sixty four percent of black respondents said this and 57 percent of whites agreed.
The nationwide telephone poll was conducted July 7-14 with 1,796 adults, and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points, according to the Times.

Greetings All
Now, I normally don’t respond to other people posts but 3 people on here struck me with their comments
Jerry Ramsdale said: I (white) have no problem with a black president, just with THIS black president. I would have no problem supporting Colin Powell, Condi Rice, or other blacks who support centrist American values. Really well let me explain something to you about them. They’re Blacks who could give a DAMN about Black people with the exception of Colin Powell.
Dr Condeleeza Rice, When the Selma Marches was going on and the 3 little girls were bombed in the Alabama Church when asked about it she said. I don’t have time to remember those things I was in Denver Colorado getting an education.
When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and most of the Blacks there were being displaced. Her ass was on Madison Ave in NYC shopping at Salvatore Ferragamo for shoes that goes for 1,000$ a pop. Then that evening went to The Metropolitan Opera House for a performance and was confronted by a WHITE woman who said to her “Why in the Hell are you here when people are dying in New Orleans?”
Centrist MY ASS I don’t have not respect for this woman as she is TRUE SELLOUT and she is out for Condi and Condi only. That’s Bush and some of you silly ass white folks that like her. She is an educated idiot if you ask me
Colin Powell on the other hand I have much respect for. He remembers where he comes from. It may have not seemed like it during the Bush years. At The Republican National Convention in Philadelphia when he spoke and told those conservative assholes. We need to do more so that the level education in this country would benefit ALL KIDS regardless of race. And then partnered with Janet Jackson for a charity he had called “America’s Promise” where it benefited ALL CHILDREN. Once Bush and the crew saw he wasn’t for the wealthy assholes. When the second Bush term began. He was asked to RESIGN! He was no longer a part of this sick ass regime
so I say to you Jerry DON’T VOTE FOR OBAMA and your damn RACIST VOTE won’t be missed AT ALL. Condi, Ward Connerly, Armstrong Williams and the rest of the “I HATE MYSELF BECAUSE I’M BLACK” crew can go straight to HELL and you can join if you like
---David C Miller you said: I am not surprised. Over the years only the laws of the land have changed concerning racial hatred. Most white folk’s hearts have not changed and never will. I am satisfied with this. I ask you WHY?
---Jillie, NO SHADE YOU HAVE ISSUES PERIOD. Because if you think John McCain is going to do anything good for this country. Keep dreaming. We will be in IRAQ forever and our economy will NEVER recover. Remember some of you fools on here want to call Obama an elitist and give the old Man with the 200$ million dollar a year wife a pass. YEAH RIGHT. You are so use to being ran by a white person you’re scared to accept Black Leadership for ALL AMERICANS! This is all based on FEAR. You have nothing to fear he is not out to take anything from you. But then again you don’t have to vote for him neither.
-------MiriamEtienne you said? I am WHITE CUBAN No disrespect but what is a WHITE CUBAN? Do you honestly think that WHITE people in America see you that way? Not hardly. Why do other minorities try to cling to Caucasians as if it going to make people feel any different about them? Well guess what they don’t. But then here’s another question can you answer me. If you’re a WHITE Cuban, Then what do you call your Cuban brothers and sisters that are dark skin a BLACK CUBAN and further more are they discriminated against for having dark skin? These are some questions. Please do not take offense as I am just trying to understand the mindset of other minorities
Just a few thoughts I have and after 8 yrs of Bush Put McCain in there and their watch this country becomes the poorest on the planet NEVER!
Remember it's not the President but the Administration you bring that makes the difference
PEACE
