Sister Act 3: Venus and Serena to face off in Wimbledon final
Staff Reporter | Posted July 3, 2008 4:07 PMIt's official. The Wimbledon championship will remain in the Williams family. Venus and Serena Williams won their semifinal matches Thursday in England to advance to the first all-Williams Wimbledon finals in 5 years.
Four-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams defeated Elena Dementieva in straight sets on Thursday. Hours later, two-time champion Serena Williams ousted China's Zheng Jie in straight sets to set up the finals.
The match will mark the third time the two sisters have met up for the Wimbledon finals and their seventh Grand Slam championship matchup. The two sisters last met up in the finals in 2003, when Serena beat Venus.
Serena has won 8 out of 15 of the matchups between the two sisters, including 5-1 in Grand Slam finals, but Venus is the defending champion at Wimbledon.
Still, a minor controversy erupted on Thursday after a reporter quoted a comment from vanquished opponent Elena Dementieva to suggest that the finals match might be fixed.
Asked during her press availability after the match how she saw an all-Williams finals, Dementieva said: "I mean, if they're going to play each other, I don't know what to say. I cannot imagine myself playing against someone from my family. It's really hard. For sure it's going to be a family decision."
A reporter interpreted the words "family decision" to mean that the family members might fix the match, and when asked about that, Venus dismissed the discussion about it at her own press availability.
"I find the question pretty offensive because I'm extremely professional in everything I do on and off the court," said Venus. "I contribute my best in my sport and I have a ton of respect for myself and my family. So any mention of that is extremely disrespectful for who I am, what I stand for and my family," Venus added.
At least one sports columnist blames the reporter for misconstruing what Dementieva meant when she said it would be a "family decision." "If you're skeptical, it's code for the fix is in. But if you're objective and fair about handling the news, you'll admit to yourself that it's totally unclear what she meant," writes Sun-Sentinel columnist Charles Bricker.
"Dementieva could and probably was responding not to who would win but how, for example, the family might deal with the sisters playing each other," Bricker wrote.
