When does it end? Detroit mayor charged with lying about other affairs
Staff Reporter | Posted July 23, 2008 10:27 AMEmbattled Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, already under indictment for lying under oath about an extramarital relationship, has been charged with lying about other romantic relationships as well.
The mayor is accused of "exchanging romantic text messages with additional women," according to the Associated Press. He was previously charged with lying under oath about an intimate relationship with his former chief of staff Christine Beatty.
In light of the new allegations, the prosecutor's office has amended charges against the mayor, who has allegedly accused prosecutor Kym Worthy of a "personal vendetta" against him. "She has no case, and the city is tired of it," Kilpatrick reportedly said.
The Detroit City Council has called for the mayor's resignation and has reportedly asked Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm to remove Kilpatrick from office. Kilpatrick has said he has no plans to leave office. The 38-year-old mayor is due in court on September 22.
