Michelle Obama to give keynote speech at Democratic Convention
Staff Reporter | Posted August 11, 2008 9:15 AM
Michelle Obama will get a major prime-time platform to talk about her husband on the first night of the Democratic Convention in August this month.
Obama was one of several "headline speakers" announced by the Democratic National Convention Committee and Barack Obama's presidential campaign on Sunday. The campaign also confirmed that Senator Hillary Clinton will be the headline prime-time speaker on Tuesday August 26.
The headline prime-time speaker on Wednesday August 27 will be Barack Obama's vice presidential nominee. Campaign officials have previously said that former president Bill Clinton will also speak that night as well.
On Thursday, August 28th, the convention center will be open to the public as the convention itself moves to Denver's 75,000 seat football stadium to accommodate the crowds who want to see Barack Obama accept the Democratic nomination.
The dates chosen for Hillary Clinton's speech and Barack Obama's speech also underscore the Democrats historic primary campaign between an African American and a woman. Senator Clinton will speak on the 88th anniversary of women receiving the right to vote, and Senator Obama will give his acceptance speech on the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.
"The 2008 Convention will highlight Americans coming together to change the course of this nation," Kansas Governor and Convention Co-Chair Kathleen Sebelius said in a news release. "This year's Democratic Convention is the story of people from across the country who believe it is time for change," she said.
Sebelius said the 2008 convention will "use the voices of the people through technology and innovative programming to lay out Barack Obama's vision and policies for how to move America in a new direction."
The Democratic National Convention will be held in Denver from August 25 through August 28. Monday through Wednesday's Convention programs will be held at the Pepsi Center in Denver. Barack Obama will accept the Democratic nomination for President on Thursday, August 28 at INVESCO Field at Mile High.
