Maya Angelou speaks out for Obama
Staff Reporter | Posted September 23, 2008 1:39 PM
Poet and author Dr. Maya Angelou, a strong supporter of Sen. Hillary Clinton during the Democratic primary campaign, is now speaking out for Barack Obama.
Last Thursday, she introduced Michelle Obama at a Women for Obama rally in Greensboro, North Carolina.
"Look where we've all come from," said Angelou. "Something wonderful is happening."
Angelou described herself as a "serious" and "sincere" supporter of Clinton and said she meant for her "to go all the way." Angelou praised Clinton as an intelligent, hard-worker campaigner who had left "18 million scratches" on the glass ceiling.
But Angelou said "we need somebody to break that ceiling down," adding "Senator Barack Obama is that person." Dr. Angelou praised Obama's honesty, intelligence, dedication and inclusiveness.
Angelou wrote several controversial columns for Clinton that were published in The Daily Voice. In her first column, she said Clinton has "always risen, much to the dismay of her adversaries and the delight of her friends." In another column, she said she was supporting Clinton because I know that she will make the most positive difference in people's lives and she will help our country become what it can be." And she even recorded a television ad for the New York senator, telling viewers that "Hillary Clinton is the prayer of every American who really longs for fair play."
But last week Angelou was singing the praises for Obama. "Who is to bring us light? Who? You really have to think of Senator Barack Obama," Angelou said.

It isn't easy to go against the tide and speak one's own mind when you have an alternative opinion.
The differnce between Maya Angelou's support of Hillary Clinton and commentary by people like Tavis Smiley and Cornel West....is that Dr. Maya never once put Obama down. She did not criticize him--she complimented and praised his candidacy. But she also executed her right to support a different candidate--a woman like herself.
I can respect that and though I've supported Barack Obama from the minute he declared he was running...I have enormous respect for those who wanted Hillary Clinton.
WHAT I DON'T RESPECT are the ones who lied on and defiled Obama. The ones who tried to make Hillary look good by demonizing and hating on Barack and Michelle.
I lost a very dear friend, who I love very much, because of that dynamic. She basically proclaimed Obama the "Anti-Christ" and revealed to me (in my opinion) a hatred for Black men in general that I found very startling and disturbing---ESPECIALLY since my own critical comments about some black men seemed to be what had attracted her to me. And that was very tragic, because I felt so uncomfortable with this friend's position and constant emails viciously LYING on Obama that I had to break off that friendship.
It doesn't mean I don't love that person. I DO. But I just don't know what to say.
This situation with Mother Maya is different.
Maya Angelou was made "Official National Poet of the United States" by the CLINTONS--she was and is an extremely close friend of theirs. I can see how it would be hard to vote against personal friends who have been very good to you. I am loyal that way as well. Maya also never once attacked Obama or belittled those of us who supported him. She praised Obama.
Maya Angelou is a very old woman who has fought tremendous odds to succeed in this very racist nation as a BLACK woman.
Many times her enemies were not just White Men...but Black Men as well. It's absurd the way so many people pretend that Black men are some "supportive backbone" towards Black women such as Maya in the same way that we, as women, have always been supportive and literally carried Black men on our backs for centuries only to be disrespected and DISCARDED when the Black man..."Got over."
For that reason, I can certainly understand why an old woman like Maya wanted to see a WOMAN in the White House before she died--even if that woman is, in my opinion, a remnant of Miss Anne.
Please realize that I have been a tireless and passionate supporter of Barack Obama and that I don't even see Obama as "black". I see him as another race--a mixed race son.
But I love him and BELIEVE in him and CLAIM the African part of him...because...what he has stood for greatly moves me.
I also support him because of Michelle--because she IS black and because by choosing her, he has given all of us African people a POSITIVE IMAGE for black children and mixed children. Something noble, beautiful, charismatic and purposeful.
I will always, always love and be loyal to Barack Obama because of that.
Now our beautiful mother, Maya Angelou, is supporting him as well. That is wonderful...and please GET REAL...
Mother Maya is an elder. She has been an architect and backbone of Black WORLD society for nearly a century. Her loyalty and nurturing of Black WORLD society has been like few others. She has paid her dues, and as an ELDER, she has the right to say, believe or support whatever she wishes.
I said this same thing about Bill Cosby a while back.
I don't agree with his WAY of saying many things...but he IS an elder. AND and he HAS supported the black community and been in collusion with it all his life (unlike some other sell-outs). We must respect the fact that he has lived long enough and earned the right to DOLE OUT LOVE in whatever means he knows to do it.
Many people hate me for the same reasons. I am outspoken, blunt and I have many views that to "Black Americans" seem "backwards"---but it is not the Mother's job to be RIGHT or to be PERFECT. It is the mother's job to be...a mother. To teach what she knows and believes and to do it with authority. Otherwise, she is not competent as a mother.
OK, I'm tired now.
tima usrah.

Everything I printed in my above statment is true and correct.
But the slanderous hateful article you concocted about me is NOT TRUTHFUL, it is not correct.
I am glad that I ended our friendship over your constant emails admonishing me not to support Barack Obama.
I am also sorry that I could not be "lesbian" for you, my sister.
I love you from the bottom of my heart--as my sister. I support you 100% as my sister, because I believed in your art; your voice and your struggle--I will always support ANY sister who has something to say. But I am "Strictly Dickly" and that's just the way it is.
Again, dear sister. I am sorry that I couldn't be "lesbian" for you--sorry you've spent so much time attempting to lie on me and MOW ME DOWN---but I am "strictly dickly."
I won't be back to respond to any other bullshit you will undoubtably post...being the BRUTE wilderbeast you are, I'm certain you'll blow a gasket...but I will leave you with this bit of truth:
THERE IS A GOD.
Yes, there is a GOD.
And THAT GOD knows that I was a sincere, loyal and committed friend to you, Alicia Banks.
THAT GOD knows that I have done nothing wrong to you---but disagree with your hatred for Barack Obama (*still have your emails).
THAT GOD knows that I am more powerful than you are (as evidenced by your b.s. Anti-Christ Kola Boof propoganda)...and THAT GOD knows...
The Heart of BOTH of us.
From my heart--I PITY you.
And as far as this propganda from "LUCKY" (who I am convinced is "Purl Girl")...and as far as the LIE that Keith Boykin is some "supporter" and "friend" of Kola Boof...I have very good reason from the F.B.I. to doubt that anyone in NYC is Kola Boof's friend, admirer, etc. It's all a Charade, darling. Really.
But let me tell you about who KOLA BOOF is--and please, make no mistake--NO ONE but Naima Bint Harith will ever be able to DEFINE Kola Boof.
I am Kola Boof...I am my own daughter. I am what my father named me. Naima, the one who is victorious; the one who is praying. That is who I am.
Two years ago, I was out dining with the father of my children when a "Kola-hater" walked up and through a glass of wine in my face.
Immediately, I licked my lips and said to Simon: "Oh, scrumptious...I think I'll have a bottle of that."
So you know...
There's a name for women like Alicia and Lucky...not that I'd use it outside of a kennel.
And to ANY and EVERYONE who advance lies about me; grand "hoax" theories and whatever else...get on your knees and ask GOD if I give a damn.
Yes, I said it--get on your knees and ask GOD if I give a damn.
And do be prepared that you might not get back up.
And when that day comes that you believe you have enough ass to get on stage on with "mama"---and that you fancy yourself ready to WHOOP Miss Kola's ass...that is the day that you should GET IN LINE with all others who've come before me.
I guarantee that my love will kill you.
None of you have been through what I've been through and lived to tell.
But did I ever hold it against your weak boring asses? Have I ever come to the dinner party and failed to look at you with anything but love? Have I once been coarse or VAGUE?
Literally, there are eyes in the back of my wig.
I've had an extraodinarily difficult life.
Upon seeing me in person people often remark that to be so young, I sound so old.
My powers are quite earned. You can't "fake" being me. What an unimaginative lout you are to post such drivel!
All that I can promise you is that you have my love...and you have my sympathy. I mean that sincerely. I DO love you.
But sad is the fool who PAID TOO MUCH...for what he got. And when you take on the mantle of "destroying Kola" it really does become TAXING.
Because in attempting to silence or slander me...no matter what you say, write down or believe...
you always leave out the fact that GOD loves me.
Yes.
SO...I WON'T BE BACK TO RESPOND TO ANY FURTHER b.s. you might post.
As always, "tima usrah" (through fire comes the family).
GOD bless you...and what's more, my enemies...
GOD HELP you.
