Obama fires back at McCain-Palin for 'lying about their records'
Staff Reporter | Posted September 9, 2008 10:30 AM
Down in the polls for the first time in the campaign, Sen. Barack Obama fired back at his Republican opponents today, accusing them of lying and re-inventing themselves to hide their records.
The new Obama TV ad, called "No Maverick," accuses McCain and Palin of "lying about their records," which the ad says is not the behavior of a maverick.
"They call themselves mavericks," the ad starts, then skids to a halt. "Whoa. Truth is, they're anything but." The ad comes in response to a new McCain ad called "The Original Mavericks," which paints the GOP ticket as long-time reformers against a corrupt system.
"He fights pork-barrel spending. She stopped the Bridge to Nowhere," the McCain ad says.
But the Obama campaign fired back. "John McCain is hardly a maverick, when seven of his top campaign advisers are Washington lobbyists," the Obama campaign's new ad says, as images of McCain's lobbyist advisers fill the screen.
"He's no maverick when he votes with Bush 90 percent of the time," the ad continues as Bush and McCain are shown together.
"And Sarah Palin's no maverick either," the ad says. "She was for the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against it."
The ad ends with a direct challenge to McCain's maverick credentials. "Politicians lying about their records? You don't call that maverick. You call it more of the same," the ad says.
The new ad comes just as McCain and Palin have tried to cast themselves as agents of change in an effort to capture the public's desire for change as registered in numerous national public opinion polls.
"This mocking response ad from Barack Obama tries to tie the Republican ticket to old, conventional politics," writes Washington Post media critic Howard Kurtz. But Kurtz warns the attack "also has the effect of bringing Obama down a notch, into a debate with McCain's running mate."
Obama appeared to stay away from criticizing Palin directly for several days, but Monday hit back at her directly for her inconsistent story about her opposition to Alaska's infamous "Bridge to Nowhere."
"You can't just make stuff up. You can't just re-create yourself," Obama said on Monday. "The American people aren't stupid. What they are looking for is somebody who's been consistently calling for change," he said.
The San Francisco Chronicle described the bridge story as "Palin's Neverending Fib to Nowhere" and criticized the GOP vice presidential nominee for her old school politics. "Sarah Palin is a newcomer, but she's using the oldest political tactic ever," the paper said. "If you repeat an inaccurate statement enough times, it becomes fact -- at least in the ears of folks who barely pay attention to politics."
Below is the McCain-Palin ad that sparked the controversy.
