Sarah Palin's 'extreme makeover' raises more eyebrows
Staff Reporter | Posted October 24, 2008 2:09 PM
It was seven weeks ago when Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin famously told us the difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull: lipstick.
Since that time, Senator Obama has been criticized for using the phrase "lipstick on a pig," which the GOP argued was a dig at Palin, even though McCain himself had used the phrase.
But for all the talk of lipstick in recent weeks, we haven't heard how much about the cosmetic costs. That is, until this week when the Washington Post reported that Gov. Palin's makeup costs are among the most expensive line items in the staff budget.
Records show that Palin's make-up artist Amy Strozzi was paid $13,200 by the McCain-Palin campaign last month alone, according to the Post.
And this month Strozzi's income has skyrocketed, raking in $22,800 for the first two weeks of October alone, according to the New York Times. That makes the make-up artist "the highest paid individual in Senator John McCain's presidential campaign," the Times reported. At the current rate, Strozzi would make $547,200 a year. That's enough to disqualify her for Barack Obama's middle class tax cut.
To be sure, Strozzi has strong credentials. She was nominated for an Emmy award for her makeup work on the television show "So You Think You Can Dance?" But the new disclosure -- coming in the same week in which it was reported that the Republican National Committee had spent $150,000 on Palin's wardrobe -- might shake her working class hockey mom image.
New polls show Palin's favorability rating has plummeted since she was first announced and now is seen as a drag on the GOP ticket by some observers. This new story is not likely to help resurrect her sagging poll numbers.
