For the first time in the general election campaign, Senator Barack Obama holds a lead in enough states to win the presidential election.
In Thursday's state-by-state polling data on Real Clear Politics, Obama had 277 electoral votes, 7 more than the 270 needed to become president. McCain had 163 electoral votes, but that number had dropped to 158 by Friday morning. Only 103 electoral votes are still toss ups, and Obama leads in most of them.
Of the 12 or so battleground states identified at the beginning of the presidential campaign, Obama leads or is close in every one of them. He carries every state that John Kerry won in 2004, giving him the same 252 electoral votes that Kerry won. But Obama is also outperforming in traditionally Republican states.
In 8 key states that Bush won in 2004, Obama leads in all of them. He leads in Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Iowa, Ohio, Florida, Virginia and North Carolina. The Illinois senator is also competitive in Missouri, Indiana and West Virginia.
Obama holds a 5.7 point lead in national polls, as of Friday morning, including an 11 point lead in Thursday's national Gallup tracking poll. The surge comes just as the stock market is collapsing and economic worries have dominated the fall campaign. And Obama's movement in the polls comes despite a week of withering negative attacks by Senator John McCain and his running mate Governor Sarah Palin, who have tried to challenge Obama's character and truthfulness because of his past associations.
Some Democratic pundits, like James Carville, are already predicting an Obama win. Some expect a landslide. While others are more cautious and worry that anything could happen, including an "October surprise" in the remaining few weeks of the campaign.
In the final stretch of the election, after next week's debate, the focus will turn to GOTV, or "get out the vote" efforts by both parties. The Democrats are hoping for young voters, African Americans and economic voters to come to the polls in high numbers, while Republicans are hoping for anti-Obama sentiments and pro-Palin supporters to turnout their base.
Both sides claim to have sophisticated GOTV operations to deliver their voters to the polls, and the Obama campaign has been using text messaging alerts to notify voters of voter registration deadlines, debates and other key events. They will also use that technology to help turn out the vote on election day.
