FSU football star selected for Rhodes Scholarship
Staff Reporter | Posted November 26, 2008 12:05 PMWhat do a former U.S. president, a former Harvard president, a senator, a famous TV news host, and a college football player have in common? They're all Rhodes Scholars.
Florida State University safety Myron Rolle is among the newest crop of recipients of the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship.
Rolle was named on Saturday as one of 32 Americans to become a Rhodes Scholar this year, entitling him to continue his post-graduate studies at the prestigious University of Oxford in England.
He joins the company of former president Bill Clinton, former Harvard president Neil Rudenstine, former Labor Secretary Robert Reich, Senator Russ Feingold, Harvard professor and author Randall Kennedy, ABC News host George Stephanopoulos, Newark Mayor Cory Booker, former U.S. senator Bill Bradley and Obama foreign policy adviser Susan Rice.
Rolle, who is African American, is a stellar scholar athlete with a 3.75 GPA in pre-med, and his football coach and team have been very supportive of his bid. To coordinate his academic and sports duties, he flew to FSU's game against Maryland on Saturday, entering the game just before halftime.
The New York Times describes Rolle as "the first major-college football player of his generation to win what is considered the world's most prestigious postgraduate academic scholarship."
Now that he's finishing up his college career early, he has to make a difficult decision. He has to decide between the NFL and Oxford.

If he did all that, just think of the impact. He would be demonstrating to black kids that with hard work and determination, one can do almost anything. He would be an excellent role model. He reminds me a bit of Paul Robeson except unlike Robeson, he doesn't face the extreme racism that limited Robeson's career and almost destroyed him.
