I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear...
Staff Reporter | Posted December 11, 2008 9:50 AM
President-elect Barack Hussein Obama will use his full name when he's sworn in to office next month.
Shortly after 12 noon on January 20, Obama will place his left hand on a bible and raise his right hand and say: "I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States." At that point, he will officially become the 44th president of the United States.
But during the campaign he never referred to himself by his middle name. So why the change? "I think the tradition is that they use all three names, and I will follow the tradition," Obama said in a newspaper interview. He said he is "not trying to make a statement one way or the other. I'll do what everybody else does."
The past three presidents all used their full names, but Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan only used their first and last names, according to the New York Daily News.
During the presidential campaign, Obama supporters criticized opponents who used the candidate's middle name to suggest that Obama, who is Christian, was a secret Muslim. Others complained that there should be no barrier to Muslims holding high office in the U.S.
Obama revealed in the interview that he plans to give a major speech in the capital of an Islamic country, using it as an "opportunity to reboot America's image," according to the Daily News story.
