NPR cancels 'News and Notes' black radio program
Staff Reporter | Posted December 11, 2008 1:00 PM
National Public Radio has canceled "News and Notes," a black radio program hosted by with Farai Chideya out of Los Angeles.
Chideya posted the news herself on her Facebook page, saying she "just got notice that News and Notes, the NPR show she's hosting, has been cancelled."
Chideya says the program will produce shows until March 20, 2009 but there was no indication as to how long the shows would air on the network after that date. She also posted a personal message: "I LOVE our audience and staff."
The departure of "News and Notes" leaves the network with no specifically black programming, according to one media analyst. Although the network continues to produce "Tell Me More" with Michel Martin, who is African American, that show is described as not black-centered.
Chideya, a veteran multimedia journalist, has worked in print, television, online, and radio for years. She has also been a correspondent for ABC News, anchored the prime time program Pure Oxygen on the Oxygen women's channel, and contributed commentaries to CNN, Fox, MSNBC, and BET.
She was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, and graduated with a B.A. from Harvard University magna cum laude in 1990.

We are a gifted enough people who can raise hell about war, wall street, and programming our options.
