Republicans debate "Barack The Magic Negro"
Staff Reporter | Posted December 30, 2008 1:10 PMControversy has broken out in the Republican Party after former Tennessee GOP leader Chip Saltsman, distributed a CD to Republican National Committee members featuring a song called "Barack the Magic Negro."
Saltsman, who ran Mike Huckabee's presidential campaign, is campaigning for Republican National Committee chairman. One of his leading opponents, Robert M. "Mike" Duncan, said he was "shocked and appalled" by Saltsman's actions. But another candidate, former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, who wants to be the first African American RNC chairman, is actually defending Saltsman.
The controversy centers around a parody called "Barack the Magic Negro" set to the music of "Puff The Magic Dragon" and sung by what news sources have called "an Al Sharpton imitator."
Saltsman has defended the CD despite the controversy and Blackwell has blamed the controversy on "hypersensitivity in the press regarding matters of race."
