'Slumdog', 30 Rock big winners at Golden Globe Awards
Staff Reporter | Posted January 11, 2009 11:36 PM
Slumdog Millionaire, "30 Rock" and Kate Winslet were big winners at the Golden Globe Awards Sunday night. Slumdog picked up 4 Golden Globe Awards, including best motion picture, best director (Danny Boyle), best screenplay and best original score.
NBC's TV series "30 Rock" won TV awards, including acting awards for Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey. Fey had a remarkable year, in part because of her popular guest role as Sarah Palin on "Saturday Night Live." But she told her critics on the Internet to "suck it."
Kate Winslet won two Golden Globe Awards, one for best supporting actress in The Reader and another for best actress in a motion picture for her performance in Revolutionary Road.
Other big winners included Mickey Rourke, who won a standing ovation and the Golden Globe for best actor in a motion picture drama for his role in The Wrestler.
The star-studded audience of Hollywood actors, celebrities, producers, directors and recording artists included Beyonce, Jay-Z, Sean "Diddy" Combs, Terrence Howard, Don Cheadle, Laurence Fishburne, Blair Underwood, Jennifer Lopez, and many others.
Lopez presented the first award of the night, for best supporting actress, to Kate Winslet, and had a little difficulty quieting the audience at their tables when the show started.
There was also a bit of politics in the air. Laura Dern took home the award for best supporting actress in a TV series for her role in the HBO TV film Recount, which depicted the story of Al Gore's unsuccessful effort to count the votes in Florida after the disputed 2000 presidential election. Dern accepted the award "as a reminder of the extraordinary, incredible outpouring of people who demanded their voice be heard in this last election so we can look forward to amazing change in this country."
In accepting the award for best TV series, musical or comedy for "30 Rock," Tracy Morgan announced a deal he reached with the show's creator and star. "Tina Fey and I had an agreement that if Barack Obama won, I would speak for the show from now on," he said. "Welcome to post-racial America. I'm the face of post-racial America. Deal with it, Cate Blanchett." Morgan thanked the foreign press, the crew, the craft services crew, and everybody except Jeff Zucker, until Alec Baldwin stepped up to whisper the name in his ear.
Bruce Springsteen, another vocal Democrat in the presidential campaign, accepted an award for best motion picture song, but made no mention of politics. Tom Brokaw introduced a clip from Frost/Nixon, and Don Cheadle (on stage with shaved head) introduced a clip from the movie, Burn After Reading.
One of the most moving moments of the night came when Heath Ledger won an acting award posthumously and received a standing ovation for his role in The Dark Knight. Director Chris Nolan accepted the award for Ledger. "He will be eternaly missed," Nolan said, "but he will never be forgotten."
The 66th Annual Golden Globe Awards, aired live on NBC from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
