Jackson doctor's clinic searched in manslaughter investigation
Staff Reporter | Posted July 22, 2009 2:23 PM
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration officials accompanied the LAPD in a search of the Armstrong Medical Clinic where Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson's personal physician who was with him when he died, keeps his office.
Despite news reports, the search of the Armstrong clinic is not being classified as a "raid," although it was unexpected. "The Los Angeles Police Department came out to Houston to conduct a search warrant and asked for help from the DEA and the Houston Police Department," said a DEA agent. "This is not a raid."
A rep from Dr. Murray's lawyer said they were caught off guard with the search.
"This is really shocking," a spokesperson for Murray attorney Edward Chernoff, said. "This was unexpected to us. We are looking into it right now and hope to have a statement on our website soon. We are shocked because we have been cooperating all along so this comes as a surprise to us."
The pop icon, 50, died of cardiac arrest at his Los Angeles mansion on June 25, just a few weeks prior to his scheduled comeback concerts.
Murray has told police he did not inject the singer with painkillers prior to his cardiac arrest. The physician has been interviewed twice by the LAPD and is considered a witness, not a suspect. A spokesman for Dr. Murray said recently that detectives are seeking a third interview and have asked him to provide additional medical records.
"Anything they are asking for, we will give them," the spokesman said."
Local media and neighborhood onlookers stood around watching the search until agents left around 1 p.m. DEA spokeswoman Violet Szeleczky confirmed that they were looking for medical records.
"The search warrant authorized law enforcement to search for and
seize items, including documents, they believed constituted evidence of
the offense of manslaughter," Edward Chernoff, Murray's attorney, said in a
statement posted on his law firm's Web site.
According to the attorney agents left with "a forensic image" of a computer hard drive and 21 documents.
