Why won't tennis give Serena her props?
Staff Reporter | Posted July 5, 2009 11:18 AM
Serena Williams is Wimbledon champion again. But the multi-decorated tennis star is not the best player in the world. If you believe the rankings.
Serena, the 27-year-old younger member of the Williams Sisters, defeated rival sibling Venus on Saturday in the finals of the prestigious British tennis tournament.
The championship victory was Serena's first since 2003 on the grass courts at Wimbledon and deprived her sister Venus of what would have been her third consecutive finals win on Centre Court.
Although Serena Williams is the reigning Wimbledon, Australian and US Open champion, she is ranked number two in the world behind Dinara Safina, a 23-year-old Russian player who has never won a Grand Slam.
"I think if you hold three Grand Slam titles maybe you should be No.1, but not on the WTA Tour obviously," Serena told reporters after Wimbledon. "You know, my motivation is maybe just to win another Grand Slam and stay No.2, I guess. I'd rather definitely be No.2 and hold three Grand Slams in the past year than be No. 1 and not have any."
Not everyone is dissatisfied with the ranking system, which values quantity over quality of victories. Sixth-ranked Jelena Jankovic defended the current rankings. "The best player is Dinara Safina. With or without a Grand Slam, she's there. She didn't buy this ranking, the ranking didn't fall from the sky," she said recently.
But fourth-ranked Elena Dementieva took a different approach, labeling Serena as the best women's player in the world.
Meanwhile, third-ranked Venus Williams did not go home empty handed on Saturday. She joined her sister to retain their doubles championship, defeating Australians Sam Stosur and Rennae Stubbs, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
The Williams sisters have dominated Wimbledon in the past decade, winning 8 of the last 10 singles championships there.
