New video shows whites were allowed to hold signs while black woman was removed from town hall
Staff Reporter | Posted August 13, 2009 3:50 PMA new video released on Thursday seems to reveal a racial double standard at t Missouri health care town hall meeting held by Senator Claire McCaskill. In a video published on The Daily Voice site on Wednesday, a black woman was removed from the town hall session after a white man attacked her and ripped up her sign depicting a picture of civil rights icon Rosa Parks.
McCaskill's office was not involved in the decision to remove the woman, but defenders of the police action cited a policy of the university where the event was held that disallowed anyone from carrying or holding up signs at the event.
But Democratic activist Peter Glickert posted a new web video on Thursday that showed a white man and a young white child were allowed to hold onto their "Don't Tread On Me" posters even after confronted by the police.
An observer at the scene complained to police that they can't just remove black people for holding up signs but not white people. The police, all of whom were white in the video, seemed to ignore the complaint and let the two white men carry on with their signs.
The video, shown above, seems to contradict claims that race was not a factor in the removal of the black woman from the town hall.
In the original incident, a black woman, later identified as Maxine Johnson, was showing the sign to a news photographer who asked to see it, the white man, identified as 67-year-old James Winfrey, walked over and grabbed her sign and stole it from her. The mostly white audience cheered when the man returned to his seat and ripped up the sign.
When the black woman got up and walked over to get her sign back, the police intervened and separated the two. But the part that was shown on most television stories only depicted the black woman being carried away by police.
