Mo'Nique wins Golden Globe
Staff Reporter | Posted January 18, 2010 8:53 AM
Dreams do come true in Hollywood, and Sunday night Mo'Nique won a Golden Globe award for her role in the film "Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire."
The 42-year-old comedian turned actress turned talk show host took home the award for best performance by an actress in a supporting role in a motion picture at the 67th Golden Globe Awards, broadcast live on NBC from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The victory immediately set off talk about the Oscars.
In one of the most moving moments on stage Sunday night, Mo'Nique stirred the audience with her unrehearsed acceptance speech, invoking her husband Sidney Hicks. "I'm shaking," she said. "And when I tell y'all I am in the midst of my dream, and when I look into the eyes of the man that I stood next to at 14 years old and I said to him, 'One day, we are going to be stars.' And he said, 'You first.' And we walked this red carpet together tonight. Sidney, I love you more than you will ever know, baby."
Asked about the Oscar buzz, Mo'Nique said she was "excited" and reminded herself of the little girl in the mirror with a towel wrapped around her head. "All of us are nothing but kids in here with grown up faces living out our dreams," she said.
Asked what advice she would give to young people, she said: "Dream the impossible dream. And don't believe the sky is the limit. Go above it."
On stage, Mo'Nique spoke about "Precious" director Lee Daniels, and behind stage after her win, she told the press more about her admiration for him. "Mr. Daniels has put out so much great work but never really gotten the recognition for his brilliance," she said. "So tonight, the world got involved. The world said we think this is a great project."
She added: "I'm excited for that brother, that the world will see his genius and his brilliance, so I applaud that."
The night also featured a surprise appearance on stage by Mike Tyson, who not only presented an award as a cast member of "The Hangover," but also walked on stage when the film won an award for best comedy.

Cecil Jones,
I came here this morning hoping to find you. I see you still refuse to get it. In light of MoNique's acceptance speech and her comments backstage, you have to concede that your interpretation of the movie as some kind of anthem to remaining silent in face of abuse was way off base, as many here attempted to explain to you.
Incest and child molestation is an ugly, uncomfortable subject. This movie put it out there in such a real and raw way that it wouldn't allow us to sweep it under the rug. That in and of itself is part of the message of hope and MoNique's comment about the Asian guy let us know that the message did reach someone.
I'm very happy for MoNique.

Cecil Jones,
I have to conclude that you just don't understand the arts.
